you can get tomato ketchup, brown sauce, vinegar, salt, pepper, honey, lemon juice, mayo, relish, mustard
but you cant get a pickled onion in a sachet.
why not? its an outrage. one purchases ones perfectly presented portion of cod and chips and then you rely on some (usually, not always it
has to be said) greasy haired chip shop proprietor to manhandle one or two pickled onions out of a mangy old jar that looks like it hasnt moved from the spot for fifty years.
to my mind, its perfectly feasible to create an irresistible looking little packet containing a drop or two of vinegar and one perfectly pre-pickled onion.
(?) not a pickled onion in sight.

Ploughman's Lunch (in a bag. With pickled onions. In another bag in the 1st bag!)
https://www.britsto...carded-8-x-38g.html Hi Po, good to see you're still pickling. I've tried these, and the onions are the best bit tbh [notripe, May 10 2019]

I didn't even realise pickled onions had an existence separate from crisp/chip flavoring, but hey, if that's what rocks your boat, I'm all for widening the flavors avalable in sachet form. |
what are you saying, you've never eaten a pickled onion? where was it you grew up again? |
I don't know [po] - there's something about that jar on the shelf, call it tradition or nostalgia or something. And what happens to the vinegar when you open the sachet? Is there any way of not tipping it everywhere? Bone withheld due to your Modest Effort. |
Why on earth would anyone want to eat a pickled onion? They're a lot better not pickled, cooked, and on pigs in blankets (hotdogs). |
My prejudice against these delightful condiments aside, I forsee a pickled bun coming towards you on the horizon - mine. |
yeah, the idea of a pickled onion makes my stomach turn. But seeing is I am not judging your taste, but your idea, you get a bun from me too! |
babyh, have you eaten a pickled onion? |
//Bone withheld due to your Modest Effort.// that sounds quite disgusting. :) |
thing is waggy, you might actually like a pickled onion with your BigMac or Wendy or whatever... this takes pickled onions into Pizza Hut and Smith's of Tooting and the cheap restaurant in Harrods or Wimpy (if they still exist). |
it is quite obvious that the world is quite ignorant of the charms of pickled onions. gawd, not all countries are blessed with chip shops. |
btw, what do pregnant american women crave for, if not pickled onions with orange ice-lollies? |
//what do pregnant american women crave for// ice cream, pickles, peanut butter, chips, crisps, large buffets of food (which are everywhere here)... |
I don't like pickled onions. And I dont understand WHY pregnant women crave for it |
Thing is po, I don't want to go to Pizza Hut or Wimpy, I want to go to the chippy and have an old pickled onion from a jar. |
po: the right side of the tracks, I guess... |
//what do pregnant american women crave for// Pasta, chips & queso. (from Chili's), chocolate, pasta, Muddy Buddies, salty french fries eaten dipped into a chocolate milkshake, pasta...;) |

po, honey, I have never tasted a pickled onion. But I like my onions. I like them on my burgers, hotdogs, grilled with veggies, sauteed, etc. So I am sure that I would be willing to try a pickled onion, even if I don't take to them. What are they pickled with? |
I used to pickle my own, its very easy. usually they are very small onions and just left to steep for several weeks/months in vinegar and pickling spices. I found various recipes when I was searching. |
pickled onions are very crisp and crunchy! I like mine with cheese and biscuits. mmmmm. |
Oh god, it's one of those hungry-making conversations again. Now I'm going to have to go out and procure myself some pickled onions. |
I really don't trust those grubby looking jars in chip shops, onion sachets would be much more sanitary so +. |
I must be an old fuddy-duddy, but what would you rather have: a bag of chips with a sachet of salt, a sachet of pickled onion and a sachet of ketchup (and tea with a sachet of sugar and a little container-of-milk-that-spills) OR a bag of chips with a salt cellar, a pickled onion from a big jar on a shelf and a hexagonal bottle of Heinz that you can whack (and a mug of tea next to a sugar bowl with a proper metal teaspoon and a jug of milk)? |
I like pickled onions, I'd give these a whirl. Ok, now whadaya got for eggs? |
there's a cream for it, shirley. |

I googled for "cocktail onions" and found some three-ounce jars that might fit in a purse or pocket. [+] |

What about a pickled-egg vending machine? |

I'll just dig through the archives. |

Wallies: those delightful anaemic looking pickled cucumbers that float around forlornly in a greasy jar behind the counter of the chippy. I love 'em. |
I'm sure this was at least partly baked in the 60s or 70s - you used to be able to buy small packets of Tuc-like cracker "sandwiches" with a sort of cheesy paste between them, and they came with a small foil packet containing a cocktail (silverskin) onion. Can't remember what they were called. Bun to a fellow pickle afficionado. [EDIT] Similar concept is those sour crunchy Japanese plums - can't remember what they're called, but they come in individual packets, IIRC |
