Chickens are wonderful creatures. They produce eggs and are fun to play with. To breed more chickens, you need a rooster. Caring for a rooster is seldom an option for suburban chicken farmers without much land. Wouldn't it be great if there were a place you could borrow one?

The chicken library allows members to borrow chickens. They can be used to produce eggs, breed, incubate eggs, consume insects, or just for companionship.

Membership requires completion of a chicken farming training course, passing a written quiz, and volunteering for the library.

So this chicken walks into a library, goes up the librarian and says "Book! Book book!"...

I also foresee problems with this, with shady characters wanting to try their hand at animal husbandry.

Is there a sardine version? I like sardines. They can dance if you train them.

It's a cute idea, but better name Rent-a-cock.

For a poultry sum you could allow the occasional non-return.

       What's the pecking order?
Will all of the books for the course be from Bantam?
Is there insurance against a flustered cluck?

Having just read [Max]'s anno, I accidentally spoonerised that. Then I realised that it actually doesn't work properly, but it was too late. Now I'm not sure whether it would end up as be 'custard' or 'clustered', both of which would be messy.

I like the depth of thinking behind this idea - it's multi-layered.

       'voluneering for the library'

       That sounds onerous.

Just to check out some chicks.
