When he hits the jackpot by eating the piece of hot green capsicum you have hidden in a plate of tossed green vegetable salad.
He/she is immediately administered ice cream, cold milk etc and handed the prize which had better be good if you still want to have people around calling you friend.
If,
however, he enjoys getting the hot piece (as mwburden has suggested) then he does not make any fuss and hence does not win the prize.
(?) (off-topic) Halfbakery survey
http://erdos.homeip.net:81/hb-survey/ Halfbakery survey, as initially suggested by phoenix. [cp, Dec 22 2001, last modified Oct 05 2004]

Andropogoninae

My wife did that very thing while eating what looked like a slice of green olive in a Cajun prawn dish. |
Not as dangerous as the ancient British custom of putting coins in Christmas pudding. |
you could play this game with salads or any kind of dish comprising a mixture of ingredients together. Lemongrass (I'm allergic) would not make me hit the ceiling as such, but would make my face and head look like a cranberry. Please do not play this trick on me - I am not entirely sure how sensitive I am to it. But if someone can tell me what else is in the lemongrass family, and therefore wise for me to avoid, I'd be most grateful. |
Ah. I used to take great delight in allowing my first daughter to taste lemon wedges when she was a toddler. Made the most hilarious faces, but never cried. She got wise to it in time. Oddly, it doesn't seem to have caused any permanent psychological disorders, but she hasn't learned to cook yet so I'm still watching my back. |
Phoenix, I too am guilty of that except I videotaped the administration of the lemon and the distorted-face result. Still funny to watch. My daughter reacted to bananas in much the same way, oddly. |
Of course, there are some of us that would enjoy getting the "hot" piece of salad as much as getting the reward! |
Very funny! I regret that my two daughters are too old for this trick now. Quite embarrasing is that my five-year old once watched friends drink tequila shots after dinner, and now whenever she finds a lemon wedge she likes to rub it on her hand, salt it and put it to her mouth as she drinks whatever is in front of her. |
All daughters at the halfbakery? I have two. |
Odd. My daughter (as a 1-year-old) used to chew lemons too, biting her way through the skin to get at the tasty juice within. She used to like eating raw garlic too. And olives. And beer. |
well, she's not a vampire then. lucky. p.s. what a great category name this is! |

I've suddenly gotten the urge for a HB survey. |
Could there be some correlation between unusual thought processes exhibited amongst ourselves and the sex of our offspring? |
Anybody interested in a survey? Put it up as an idea: "boy/girl" and ask to state number and gender of offspring. |
Wouldn't be an invention, then, would it? |
snarfyguy: No. It would not be an invention. Unless you regard your offspring as inventions, that is. |
[phoenix] has expressed a curiosity regarding the male/female ratio of offspring among .5b'ers and I, too, feel curious about the results of such a survey. |
If anyone is interested in partaking in the survey that [phoenix] and [neelandan] suggested, see the link I just posted. (Note that the server that it's running on is not permanently switched on so if the link doesn't work, you may want to try again in several hours' time.) |
vasectomise them. (word of the week) |
Sorry for another off-topic anno here but: |
The web page has been fixed, it actually stores the data from the form now. Really. Apologies to UnaBubba (or someone else from Queensland) and also someone from the UK who tried to access it unsuccessfully about 4 times before giving up. |
[snarfyguy] You know the HB isn't about inventions. It's about ideas. |
Postulating a correlation between parental perspective and offspring gender sounds like an idea to me. FWIW, it's been taken off the HalfBakery. |
[cp] Thanks for your work. I haven't been able to get there either (yet). At the risk of offending [gizmo mum] and [bristolz] should we exclude (or separate) the females since they don't determine the sex of the offspring? |
Alrighty. The reason why it wasn't accessible for the last N hours was because the server is generally only on during waking hours, Perth time. That means around midnight --> 3pm GMT. |
[phoenix] We will see if this has any effect on things or not. The page has been modified so it now stores gender of Halfbaker along with gender of children. When I get time, I'll get the results page to further break down the results rather than just showing totals. |
(Ouch! Just noticed that my ISP has recently (as in: it was working yesterday) started blocking port 80 accesses. Changed server URL... there seems to be an evil conspiracy afoot stopping this survey from happening.) |
[gizmo mum], [bristolz], [po]: I'm about to add your answers to the database now. |
offended p, you try having offspring without us
(3 male offsprung) |
wow, cheers [arora]. That's v useful. |

Hypothesis: œb'ers do not try to fool their sons |
I've just added a heap of little graphs, showing the currently-collected data (admittedly not too plentiful at the moment) in various ways. |
Hypothesis from current evidence: the women amongst us tend to have sons, and the gentlemen all seem to have daughters. |
Posit: Men visit the HB to get away from their women, women visit the HB to get away from their men. 8^) |
some women visit the HB to get nearer their men |
Seeing the Pillsbury doughboy, [po]? |
From survey results:"At the moment, 8 people have taken the Halfbakery survey. They have 11 children in total, of which 6 are boys and 5 are girls. Of the participants, 4 were male and 4 were female." |
I don't have any kids at all, so I didn't think there was much point... |
Hm, yes. The situation is worse than neelandan thought, actually. As of this annotation, there have been 9 people fill out the survey, and 4 had no kids. (This is now shown on the results page.) |
I'd like updated statistics by gender of the parent. |
