When laying pre-cut tongue and groove plywood subfloor, the tongues and grooves are cut from a standard 4 foot by 8 foot sheet. The result when the tongues and grooves are milled and joined together is the loss of the overall 4 foot by 8 foot dimensions. This is of concern if your floor dimensions
are based on 4 feet (e.g. 20'x28'), because laying sheet after sheet that is just a little short adds up. The result is you need to purchase a few more sheets just to finish out a couple of inches of floor length.
I want a 4-foot long, thin, plastic strip that has grooves cut (every 6 inches) perpendicular to the long axis of the strip. The strip would only be about 1.5 inches tall. Inch-long spikes (like small double pointed nails) would be held in the grooves of the plastic strip. Attach one sheet of plywood to the joists and take the the now loaded (spiked) strip and place it at the edge, then place the next sheet of plywood (full 4'x8' sheets mind you) and push (hammer) it into the strip. The two sheets would be butt spiced for added strength.
You no longer need expensive tongue and groove plywood that is not even the advertised dimensions. You only need a cheap plastic subfloor spike holder, some spikes, and a floor to build.

Wouldn’t the nails tend to split the plywood? Better to have both sheets grooved, and insert a long double-sided tongue into the butt. |
