And the main question, why? Anybody ever laugh at a cough? A sneeze? No because they're not funny, duh. And if a fart is funny, somebody shitting their pants should be hilarious right? Well, no. That's not how it works. What about a burp? Nope. Kinda gross, but not gross enough I guess. Gotta be right
in that sweet spot of gross, but not too disgusting. Maybe it's just the sound? Nope, somebody shitting their pants would sound the same.
What about non humans? Animals, especially chimps share surprising human traits, dancing to music smiling, playing tricks on each other. Would a chimp find a fart funny?
I propose an expensive study that gives me lots of money whether I get the answer or not.
Words of wisdom.

Eh, not satisfied with this study.
https://www.helsink...why-are-farts-funny "demonstrate our shared humanity and to add a modicum of equality between people" Okay, if an emperor says "Look upon your majesty and bow down!" Then farts, I'm laughing all the way to the gallows. [doctorremulac3, Apr 03 2025]
And it can cause problems.

the research needs to be done first! Documentaries, at best, summarize available knowledge. There isn't much to go on here. I'll happily step into the breach. Send funding. |
Ill match any donation to your research fund. I think its a worthy cause. |
I think you don't want a ten-part series just on this. |
You have a series where this is one episode, another is nineteenthly's "The Natural History of Accidental Penises", one about unfortunate logos and urls like expertsexchange, maybe one full episode dedicated to interesting facts about Uranus (played completely straight), and so on. |
I think we need to get Ze Frank on board. |
I'd be down with that. Maybe the genre needs its own cable channel. |
Changing this to "study" instead of "documentary" because I'm serious, I don't know why people laugh at farts and not burps or worse. |
Some burps are funny, but you're right, it's a good control. Air escaping from one end of a tube, funny, the other, largely not. |
Falling over is also near universally funny. Having owned dogs, and watching one chase a ball, massively screw up the chase and end up impacting a fence upside down, it's clear that the skulk off embarrassed, but other dogs watching this clearly show some level of amusement. |
Yea, if a burp is on purpose, especially if they articulate some word with the burp, okay, that's very funny. |
And just realized, a fart doesn't even have to be real, a whoopee cushion is funny. |
Falling is another thing that's mysteriously funny. |

I'm just very curious about why me and other humans and even animals laugh at certain things. Still a mystery why guys laugh at explosions for instance as long as the rules are followed: 1- Nobody got hurt 2- It's at a paid event, like a car show for instance or 3- It's fireworks, especially if the people doing the lighting of them are doing the laughing. |
In fact, come to think of it, I don't think I understand laughing at all. I do it most days, several times a day, but I have no idea why. |
I'm also aware that this is the golden age of laughter and humor, because friends and family send me funny memes most every day, many of which make me laugh. |
I never used to laugh several times a day as far as I can remember. Definitely didn't laugh several times every morning over my coffee. Read the funny papers but I don't remember ever laughing at them. |
