Rename months alphabetically

Make sorting files and folders easier

10 - 4 - 09 or is that 4 - 10 - 09...? or is that 09 - 4 - 10... etc etc...

I much prefer to note dates using the three letter prefix for month - Oct - 4 - 09. Pretty simple right? But what happens when one would like to sort such files?? Something like this :

April

August

December

Febuary

January

July

June

March

May

November

October

September

Hardly organized, yet still alphabetical. I propose that we rename the months such that they are in alphabetical order - We would need to give them new names because reordering the old names would be just TOO complicated (this method is much less complicated :)

The first few months might be named: Anoggen, Cookember (pronouced Coo-Kember), Donutuary etc etc...

It would be an adjustment... Before long we would need a cheat sheet to read old documents with referrences to date... but we'd be able to sort by month so much easier!!

How about re-organising the alphabet instead?

       That's ridiculous!

Let's all make everything beige to make color-coordinating easier.

Don't most office software programs let you sort by month already?
sninctown, Oct 22 2009

I too would welcome the renaming of the months (and days as well), but not for the reason you cited. However, your reason may be a good excuse to get the job done. [+]

And you thought Y2K was going to be a problem...

We should definitely re-organise the alphabet so that, finally, it's ordered alphabetically.
theleopard, Oct 23 2009

Alphabetically, if sorted alphabetically, would become Aaabcehilllpty - Months, would become hmnost.

Hmnost Aaabcehilllpty - a vast improvement.

       // Let's all make everything beige //

No, black. Black goes with anything.

Why have months at all ? Why not just have day numbers ? 23 October 2009 could be better expressed as 2009.295 (1st January would be 0). Much more compact, much easier to process.

Days and years are intrinsic to astronomical cycles. So are Lunar months, but Calendar months bear no resemblance to Lunar cycles. Much better to have year/day only.

       The astrologists won't be happy...

Why even have year? Simpler to start at zero, although perhaps not at the arbitrary BC/AD changeover, and count from there.

So, let's make today number 0.

Battle of Hastings was on day -344,427. Easy!
theleopard, Oct 23 2009

But that's only any good if you're interested in discrete units that are one day big - More often than not, there will be cyclic processes that need to be managed in block-form - sometimes those cycles are 7 days long, sometimes they are approx 30 days long, and sometimes they are 90 days, 180 days or 360 days long.

I think the problem here is the apparent requirement to sort things "alphabetically" - a proper way to do this would be to be able to manage sort-parameters on anything that has sorting. This way you can choose between alphabetic, numeric, or a pre (or user) defined enumeration.

Not to mention the fact that my mp3 player plays tracks in alphabetical order without any reference to the ID3 track no.
wagster, Oct 23 2009

Time doesn't exist. I've told you before!

I'm all in favour of renaming the months on a regular basis (perhaps with some commercial sponsorship thrown in for good measure) so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to do it alphabetically.

I have long since given up recording the date using months and years. Each instance that requires date recording is noted as X + B, where X is X and B is the number of days since the requirement for X to exist came to my attention. Therefore, a letter that I have been meaning to write for one of your earth weeks is dated X + 7, but a cheque for an unplanned purchase of tinfoil and a collander is dated X. Much simpler.

I think we should delete July and August, and realign everything with their Greek / Latin prefixes. November becomes Hendecember and December becomes Dodecember, (in which nothing is done, oddly).

While we're at it, Unuary, Biuary, Triuary, Quaduary aren't bad either...
RayfordSteele, Oct 23 2009

Here, here! And let's make March the first month again so that DECember is again the tenth month. What idiot changed that all around anyway?

       Happy New Year!

The chinese, since they have had to switch to the same calendar the rest of the world uses, don't have names for months or days. The week is literally "week" or "day" 1-7. Months are 1-12 "month".

You could switch to this nomenclature.

       "what day is it?"
"It's 2009-year, 10-month 23-day, week-5"
CaptainClapper, Oct 23 2009

       Alpha, Beta, Gamma...

Or you could adopt the Quaker custom that does away with month names entirely, referrinng to them instead as "First Month" "Second Month" etc
smendler, Oct 23 2009

[capt.clap], except the chinese year isn't 2009 either, I believe it is 4707.
dentworth, Oct 23 2009

they use the standard calendar now -- that is, in news reports, publications, radio broadcasts, etc. I haven't really run into anything done with the old calendar - except holidays, that is.

       "2009”N10ŒŽ23“ú..."
