A flexible umbrella accessory, about 4 inches long with an extensible section which plugs into the 3.5 mm jack in a smartphone or tablet to do what umbrellas do while you use the phone without fear of it getting wet.

Waterproof Smartphones http://www.gottabem...kstart-your-summer/
Wouldn't one of these be much easier? [Canuck, Sep 27 2013]

You could make a prototype with a cocktail umbrella, some waterproofing spray or wax, and discarded airline headphones.

I might try to Bake this... another good use would be as a Jackasol, for keeping sunlight off the screen and thereby eliminating glare.

You people really do walk around all day with your eyes glued to your smartphones, don't you?! I was beginning to think that was a TV-ad stereotype, but now...

Well actually, I was thinking along the lines of waiting at a bus stop or taxi stand... but it would be a nice accompaniment to that app that uses the camera to show you where you're going while texting, now that you mention it.

I thought this was going to be an umbrella canopy for the end of a standing erection to protect against the rainfall of ejaculate.

       I'll get me coat.

You could have it project out the top of the device and use the business part of the umbrella as a screen/advertising space.

I thought it might be for changing a tire... this is good too.

I thought it might be jackalope related.

I thought it was the men's version of the Jillbrella.

I like Jackasol best. Way to go +

Canuck, I thought of the waterproof phones but there are several drawbacks to that: first, your choice of smartphone is limited. My Jackbrella works with any device that has a 3.5mm jack. A larger variant could even be designed, therefor, for laptops. Second, using a smartphone with a capacitive touchscreen when wet is very difficult and frustrating because it misreads your touches a lot. It might not damage the phone, but it's not a pleasant experience. Third, waterproof phones still aren't glareproof phones. Note the double duty my proposed device can do.
