Unpowered finger heating gloves

Redistribute heat from your palm to your fingertips

I have a problem in winter in that my fingertips get very cold (mild Raynaud's 'disease'). The problem is that the blood flow to my fingetips shuts off when they get cold. When I wear gloves, my hands get hot, but my fingertips do not as there's nothing to heat them.

I know that you can buy gloves with in-built heaters but they are bulky and require a power-source. And in any case, my hands themselves don't need any heating.

So, how about gloves that redistribute the heat from my hands to my fingertips? I have heard of highly heat-conducting material being used to defrost meat - how about gloves with a mesh of this material (or indeed any metal) inside? They could be quite thin and still be effective.

Lobster Claw Gloves 3 Brands mentioned http://www.enteract.../handprotection.htm
Some of the warmest hand gear produced by a cycling company were the Specialized Lobster Claws. A similar product is the Nashbar Penguin Glove, and the Pearl Izumi Stretch Amfib. [thumbwax, Jan 04 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004]

welcome, tobythepig! any friend of st3f's is a friend of ours.

i have a similar problem due to a mild frostbite incident many years ago, and have found that mittens actually work much better than gloves at keeping my fingertips warm. one other advantage is that you can curl your fingers into your palm for extra warming when needed.
mihali, Jan 04 2002

       Thankyou mihali :)

Yes, mittens would be better for me. I wonder why I never thought of that? I do have a pair of cycling gloves however with only two 'fingers' (and one thumb of course). Having two of my fingers in each of the gloves 'fingers' is half way to wearing mittens (and gives some heating benefits) but allows me to use the bike's controls where mittens would not. I do look like some kind of lobster though, so they're not for walking down the street in <g>

Some peculiar Frenchman (or am I being redundant?), I forget who, had a pet lobster which he would talk for walks using a pink ribbon as a leash.

I've seen gloves like you mention (think it was at Gander Mountain a few years back), but danged if I can find any mention of them on the 'net...

Walk down the street - who cares what a small mind thinks - mild or not, Raynauds disease needs proper care. Pearl Izumi's are retailing for 49.00.

Not me this time! Hah! Blissmiss - TAG, you're it.

[angel] it's been suggested to me that it was Salvador Dali who had a pet lobster, but I can't find confirmation of that. He did invent the lobster telephone though...

[thumbwax] thankyou for your concern :) I do take care. My cycling gloves are from Madison - they look very similar to the gloves you found.

angel: poet Gerard de Nerval (1808-1855).

"Why should a lobster be any more ridiculous than a dog...or any other animal that one chooses to take for a walk? I have a liking for lobsters. They are peaceful, serious creatures. They know the secrets of the sea, they don't bark, and they don't gnaw upon one's monadic privacy like dogs do. And Goethe had an aversion to dogs, and he wasn't mad."

Darli may not have had a pet lobster but he did have an obsession or fear connected with them that influenced his art (see link). The image of a pet lobster might have come from a rather surreal documentary of about Darli, which discussed his fear of being followed by one. The same series of documentaries also covered Author Conan Doyle.

Regarding your fingers I suggest you grasp a Sterling Engine between your palm and your fingers and use the heat differential to power your PDA ...
Aristotle, Jan 06 2002

I had a vague memory of lobsters being a sexual symbol for something or other (yes, I know everything is, yes) any way I have added a link which might interest the Dali lovers among you sorry I mean the Dali admirers.

       Any Dali llamas amongst us?

Oddly enough, I was about to post something like this. My wife has Raynaud's. You can get gloves with a silver thread woven into them which are supposed to carry heat from the palm to the fingertips, but I don't know how effective they are.

How about a glove with flexible heat-pipes in it? The would have to be made of silicone tubing, and the working fluid would have to operate at a modest pressure.
MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 20 2019

Not NaK as a working fluid, then ?
8th of 7, Jan 20 2019

       I'm leaning towards "no".
MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 20 2019

I have also been thinking about this, also using heat pipes. Flexible metal heat pipes exist, but seem to be rare. You can easily get flexible metal tubes capable of holding pressure/vacuum, but they're bulky: [link]
