Streets:Corners:USA Conundrum

While reading newly released testimony about the Theranos crash (dodgy dot.com punting a dubious blood testing machine. Link) I came upon a conundrum.

"Walgreens ..the drugstore giant had more than 8,000 stores and if Theranos could get its technology into every single one, that would mean being on almost every street corner in the country."

There are about a million streets (Quora estimate) in the US, but apparently only 8,000 corners. Obviously some intersections may be rounded, but otherwise..

Annotation:

Even if you weaken the criteria, from "every street corner in the country" to "a store on the corner of every block", it's still not looking good. Imagine a city made up of 10 north-south streets and 10 east-west streets and 100 intersections. To fulfil the criteria of "a store on the corner of every block", every group of 4 blocks needs a store, so for your 20 streets, you'll need 25 stores.

Step one: designate most thoroughfares as "Way", "Road", "Lane", "Drive", "Avenue" or, in extremis, "Boulevard".

Step two: recognize a "street corner" only where one "Street" crosses another "Street", excluding all of the above.

Or, better, recognize a "street corner" only where one street changes direction by more than 45°, but retains its name. The rest are "intersections".

wonder if there's a waze style map out there with corners and corner walkers.

I've been wondering what Walgreens is going to do with all the extra rooms they built in their stores in anticipation of hosting Theranos machines.
