Cats don't *really* want to go out or come in twenty-million times an hour, they just like having their own butler, so...

A small door on a frame on a stand; can be placed proximate to the sofa or la-z-boy chair. Cat meows, open the door, cat walks through, close the door. Rinse and repeat without all the pointless running repeatedly to the real door.

Perhaps some form of proximity sensor and an automatic opener?

Whichever you settle on, my cat will order one.
