       Actually, nuking would dry out residual sweat and kill bacteria on a used pair, so they might not smell.   

       Until you put them back on your feet, that is: the nutrients would still be in the fibres.

       Working in a metal shop in winter and being the new guy I was laughed at for nuking my metal handling gloves(leather). It took about a half hour before everyone was doing it and became a regular thing.
