A haircut can be a marvellous thing. While the potential for disaster is always there, a good haircut can do wonders for a person's self-image. Sometimes, taking a little off the sides can take years off a person, and drastically change the way other people see them.
Now consider the humble housecat.
Although they have more hair than us humans, its length and placement seems to be genetically pre-determined. Cats don't have the luxury of haircuts - they just shed. I've had my cat for years, and I've never had to give him so much as a trim. I have had to shave a few of his favourite chairs, though. And quite a few of my armchairs used to have a long back and sides before Bob got his claws into them.
But: my cat also likes watching TV. He particularly enjoys nature programs - specifically, those featuring Big Cats. Lions in particular will have him glued to the screen for hours at a time. While he likes watching these programmes, I don't think he actually gets the whole concept of "television". Given that my TV isn't exactly huge, I'm fairly sure that when he watches these programmes he's thinking - "Man, that Africa place has some really small trees. And the people over there are pretty tiny too. The mice seem to have longer legs and pointy horns, but if this huge guy's lap wasn't so damned comfy, I'd be over there in a shot."
I want to give my little cat the best of both worlds. Let him live out his savannah fantasies in my tiny backyard. I'd like to give him a mane wig - so he can feel all self-important (and a little like Don King) as he stalks butterflies through the toe-high grass ("Big Cats my arse", he'll think - "never seen those lions tackle anything with wings as big as this..."). Also, instead of a bell on his collar, he'll have a tiny microphone/speaker system, which will take his squeaky little meows and slow them down and amplify them until they rival the roars of his African cousins.
Wee cats should be given big cat respect. Who'd have thought such a sleekly evolved hunter could end up being so damn cute?

You'll probably get scratched but the
cat will look cute for a few seconds. + |

I'm covering Bob's eyes as i check out the links... |

That first cat [link] looks like he's about to commit murder, I've never seen a cat so outraged! He's got every right to be pissed off of course. |
I don't think ld was proposing any shaving to be carried out. |
+1 a joy to read as usual. |
I suppose the all-over version would be a Maine wig. |
I think Pete and Dud would go for this. They wouldn't like the putting on bit, naturally, and they don't watch a lot of television, but I'm all for educating cats about their families and I'm sure they'd like the whole role playing thing. |

I don't know how people get close enough to cats to give them those lion cuts. In our house you'd end up with serious lacerations. I'm not sure why you'd want to either - one of my favourite things is curling up on the sofa with Pete stroking his furry tummy. It would be nasty if it was just skin. |

In his younger days, I often gave my golden labrador a 'lion cut' with electric clippers. Left a tuft at the end of the tail and a ruffle around the neck, made the rest quite short. He looked fantastic!! Other dogs would literally stop and stare!! |
Consul, that might be hard to do with the golden labrador, since they have such short hair. |
[ldischler] It is short, but long enough, and the coat thick enough, to give quite an effect when clipped. The overall shape and colouring of golden labs also helps create a mini lion appearance. My guy is too old to do it again (the clipped hair doesn't grow back) but the memories are precious. |

[Z] I'm sure, but some of them put up a hell of a fight when you try to get their lederhosen off... |
Funny stuff! Both the lion wig and the lion cut :D |
A lot of Maine Coon cats tend to have a rather mane-like appearance to their coat; it may be accented somewhat by wearing a collar, but the manes are pretty impressive. |

As noted by my link (q.v.). |

Also as suggested by my first anno way up there ---^ |
