I admit to not knowing much about Polo, though for me paying some attention to the lesser-known team sports is something of a hobby, but it seems that the game would be quite exciting played on a lake on jet skis, with a smaller version of the water-polo ball.

Would it still have that hole in the middle?
MaxwellBuchanan, Mar 20 2008

There's a hole in the middle of something in Polo? Or are you just eating a donut?
globaltourniquet, Mar 20 2008

       mmmmmmm polos.
po, Mar 20 2008

They were the first mint to be brought back from the New World by the Irish explorer, Mark O'Polo, after whom they are named.

       Must be a Brit thing.

Polos are wrongly called "Lifesavers" in the colonies, much as "Marathon" is wrongly called "Snickers".

I like it except you'd have to swing the mallot with your left hand to keep your right on the throttle. Unless there was some kind of throttle lock which seems dangerous, though I did put one on one of my motorcycles.
MisterQED, Mar 20 2008

A throttle lock would be even more dangerous in the context of a fast-moving ball/motor sport.

I think, in fact, there's a reason there really are no ball/motor sports.

Speaking of which, did I ever mention that Rollerball (the original 1975 Jewison film, mind you!) is a work of genius? An art film in the guise of a bloodsport flick? Did I? Just checking.

It would be even more exciting on water skis.
normzone, Mar 20 2008

Funny, [normzone], I thought of that first, but then I said "Boats? Crashing too much? Yes. How About Jet Skis?" Then the guy I walked past in the hallway looked at me funny. I had no bluetooth in my ear.

       what's lifesaving about polos?

       //what's lifesaving about polos?//

Apparently, if you're stranded on a desert island, you can use the hole as a 1x magnifier to focus the sun's rays and start a fire.

You can also use them as a navigational aid. You place one in the middle of a flat rock; then place two polos on the north side of the first one, three on the south side, four on the east side and five on the west. Then, by interpolation, you can find any direction you choose.
MaxwellBuchanan, Mar 21 2008

what if you don't have a compass?
po, Mar 21 2008

Just float a magnetized polo in a bowl of water, with the lettering uppermost. The "o" will point north.
MaxwellBuchanan, Mar 21 2008

       which "o"
po, Mar 22 2008

Whichever one is pointing toward the two polos in the arrangement on the flat rock, of course.
MaxwellBuchanan, Mar 22 2008

Can we play Lake Polo on Polo Lake in Rhode Island?
