Use a medium powered laser to etch patterns in the eye's iris. After paralyzing the eye muscles in a similar manner used for lasic eye surgery, a miotic is administered to fully constrict the pupil, providing a large working canvas.
The laser will scorch the tissue, creating contrasting images around
the pupil. Radial designs are best suited. Perhaps flames, sawtooths, or simple rings might be common choices. Maybe a cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine molecule for chemistry lovers.
Just don't flinch...
Cool contacts, smileys too.
