When he hits the jackpot by eating the piece of hot green capsicum you have hidden in a plate of tossed green vegetable salad.

He/she is immediately administered ice cream, cold milk etc and handed the prize which had better be good if you still want to have people around calling you friend.

If, however, he enjoys getting the hot piece (as mwburden has suggested) then he does not make any fuss and hence does not win the prize.

       you could play this game with salads or any kind of dish comprising a mixture of ingredients together. Lemongrass (I'm allergic) would not make me hit the ceiling as such, but would make my face and head look like a cranberry. Please do not play this trick on me - I am not entirely sure how sensitive I am to it. But if someone can tell me what else is in the lemongrass family, and therefore wise for me to avoid, I'd be most grateful.

       Ah. I used to take great delight in allowing my first daughter to taste lemon wedges when she was a toddler. Made the most hilarious faces, but never cried. She got wise to it in time. Oddly, it doesn't seem to have caused any permanent psychological disorders, but she hasn't learned to cook yet so I'm still watching my back.

       Very funny! I regret that my two daughters are too old for this trick now. Quite embarrasing is that my five-year old once watched friends drink tequila shots after dinner, and now whenever she finds a lemon wedge she likes to rub it on her hand, salt it and put it to her mouth as she drinks whatever is in front of her.

       Postulating a correlation between parental perspective and offspring gender sounds like an idea to me. FWIW, it's been taken off the HalfBakery.

       Alrighty. The reason why it wasn't accessible for the last N hours was because the server is generally only on during waking hours, Perth time. That means around midnight --> 3pm GMT.   

       [phoenix] We will see if this has any effect on things or not. The page has been modified so it now stores gender of Halfbaker along with gender of children. When I get time, I'll get the results page to further break down the results rather than just showing totals.   

       (Ouch! Just noticed that my ISP has recently (as in: it was working yesterday) started blocking port 80 accesses. Changed server URL... there seems to be an evil conspiracy afoot stopping this survey from happening.)
