In reality, you'd just use rounding; when rugby went metric, the 25 yard line became the 22 metre line. It was no big deal.

Perhaps, in an effort to realign the US with the UK and the rest of the universe, redesign all sports arenas to utilize metric. In fact, rounding considerably up might compensate for the increased abilities of the players over the decades.

They're our sports, we invented them. They don't work in metric, just invent superior metric sports and let the world vote with their satellite tv subscriptions etc.

Ref: “You’re 2 centimeters short of a field goal.”

Team: “Can we just round it up?”

       Ref: “Sure”

Team: “Yay! We just won the Super Bowl!”
