ridiculous .5b rescue plans

sometimes my value of quantity obscures my urge to find the very highest quality. Thus I radiate acknowledgement that the .5b, if it seeks to attract participants, should certainly seek those awesomer than I.

That said I think, hey, this place could generate even more superbness with a larger quantity of active users.

Amazingly, wikipedia says it has a mere 100,000 active editors. That kind of scares me as I might be one of them. 7 billion people, 100k active wikipedia creators. I think finding the upper 1 pct of wikipedians then beguiling them to visit .5b might be possible without spamming.

I also suggest that everytime a .5b person links to a patent number we contact the inventor with an autogenerated paper letter (a mere 58 c).

This can be crowdsourced if Jutta tolerates the idea. Just put MFC on an idea then a mysterious benefactor (5.90 budgeted) sends an actual patent holder a .5b invite that relates to their actual technology. As a side benefit the quality of references along with google pagerank go up

The visits will probably go up again as winter sets in if you're very concerned.
rcarty, Nov 30 2011

No one visits the Halfbakery. Apart from my contributions, the entire thing is generated by an AI student project.
hippo, Nov 30 2011

No, it's unconsciously generated by my dissociative personality.
nineteenthly, Nov 30 2011

You're all wrong. It's actually one of my most ingenious works of experimental fiction.
Alterother, Nov 30 2011

I had noticed that as the general level of asshattedness goes up, the number of interested contributers goes down.
RayfordSteele, Nov 30 2011

//No one visits the Halfbakery. //

I do. It was either this or 2,000 hours of community service. Some courts just don't see the merits of experimentation, and side to a wholly unreasonable extent with ship-owners and with the vocal minority who are luddishly opposed to the deployment of cetacean-mounted Whimshurst machines.

If action is needed, perhaps we should establish a working group to define KPIs, quantifiable deliverables, and a full lost/benefit ratio analysis. I would say that some 360° helicopter thinking is called for, but I fear it would be taken in the wrong way.
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 30 2011

Good idea - those 180° helicopters tend to crash rather a lot.
hippo, Nov 30 2011

but usually the right way up.
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 30 2011

I like the idea of promoting website membership growth through a process of targeted beguilement, perhaps swinging by other fora to ooze sex appeal, making Slim Browning eyes at prominent and talented Other Site contibutors, only once they've fallen fully for our charms closing the pheromone sluice and saying "can you just read this webpa- never mind what it's about, get on with it".

But each website's norms are peculiar to that site, and importation of alien dweebstock might result in a wholesale disruption of the halfbakery geekosystem, in a manner akin to introducing rabbits to Australia. Far better, then, to use the carnivorous plant method of attracting meat: release our stink into the atmosphere (google) and let those who are so enchanted fall into our sticky pit, where we can make use of them as we see fit.

       I see half a navel.

       /those 180° helicopters tend to crash rather a lot/

Maybe we could lash two of them together? A sort of yin/yang operation?

But re that dweebstock, calum - hybrid vigour and all. I will loan the dweebs a fresh cummerbund and set out the candles; you go ahead and release that stink. Note: vigour has a u in it, for these purposes.

Tie them to the backs of cats.
RayfordSteele, Nov 30 2011

"But each website's norms are peculiar to that site"

       So true, [calum], so true.
normzone, Dec 01 2011

Have to confess, I didn't realise that there was any sort of a crisis going on that required rescue attempts to be made. Has the 'bakery accidentally dozed off on its Li-Lo and drifted out to sea or something?
DrBob, Dec 01 2011

Not beyond my usual benign neglect. It's just beanangel being obsessed with halfbakery page rank and visitorship numbers. (Second post about this. The first post, if I understood correctly, suggested a link farm and more frequent posts about sex.)

Unsurprisingly, I continue to feel that spamming or badgering people is unethical. So please don't do it here or on behalf of this site.
jutta, Dec 01 2011

Perhaps a bakery version of the mile high club, ideas posted in unusual locations or circumstances, 'I'm posting an idea in the middle of an executive board meeting' would induce interest. Or an 'Occupy Lewes' event.
RayfordSteele, Dec 01 2011

That's worth an idea of its own, [RS].
pocmloc, Dec 01 2011

       //more frequent posts about sex//

Ah, I might have to vote in favour of that one then. So long as it's healthy, middle-class sex that nobody enjoys and is strictly for breeding purposes only.
DrBob, Dec 01 2011

Somebody could always create a new UB account.
RayfordSteele, Dec 01 2011

"Perhaps a bakery version of the mile high club,"

[Raymond], this sounds like a good idea. First I need to locate a willing 'baker of the female persuasion in my locale - this sounds like a porn popup I could click on. "Due to complaints by our large population of female halfbakers, men sign up free for the next 24 hours".

"So long as it's healthy, middle-class sex that nobody enjoys and is strictly for breeding purposes only." [Dr], I think I can only agree to the first half of that.
normzone, Dec 01 2011

Not sure who Raymond is, but I'm told everybody loves that guy.

I think [MikeD's] present baking location beats everyone else's.
RayfordSteele, Dec 01 2011

Sorry about that, [RayfordSteele] - that will teach me to indulge in abbreviated address.

I envy [MikeD] his access to explosives, but not the fact that others attempt to hide them from him - he more than earns his priveleges.
normzone, Dec 01 2011

Frequent spam badgering could be called "spadgering".
bungston, Dec 01 2011

//"Perhaps a bakery version of the mile high club,"//

Well... half a mile, actually... but it has to be in a dirigible or after being shot out of a cannon or trebuchet.
FlyingToaster, Dec 02 2011

       noted

this raises the strategy of merely improving the quality of ideas placed here

another publicity attempt was also averted recently. The latest scheme was to go to the Nobel Lindau lectures at sciencemag.org where nobelists reply to queries then ask them something nifty with a .5b link I even thought up some new physics to test the MWI

That the .5b seems to have higher quality speculative cognitions than much of what the nobelists were being asked irks me so Im going to see if I can get someone here to get a nobel prize to garner publicity. anybody here that wants a nobel prize just put up some high quality stuff. If it looks awesome just MFNB it

       </badgering>
beanangel, Dec 02 2011

//improving the quality// just as soon as we achieve a consensus on what metric the halfbakery uses for "quality." Can I be on the subcommittee for quantifying jam and bees?
mouseposture, Dec 03 2011

That quantcast link is interesting. The number of visitors (more specifically US visitors) has plummeted over the last year. Is there a similar chart that goes back several years?
xaviergisz, Feb 23 2012

I was startled as well as pleased to note that the .5b is cited at 87 patents searching patentstorm.com with halfbakery it is possible with applications that the .5b has over 100 prior art references at the patent office

I was looking up the idea of a touch sensing USB drive that would automatically rightupdate files when you touched it prior to going. I saw a .5b reference. A person at Apple thought of the idea already around 2009
