Have you ever walked into some hole in the wall restaurant and thought...wow...this place is bigger than I thought...only then you notice that there are walls full of mirrors. Well, what about harnessing that space for advertising. Now when you look into them, what you see are all the Budweiser posters and Miller Lite neon signs etc. reversed. But what if there was a way to cancel out the image reflected in the mirror and instead project another image into that space in the mirror. The same way they do during televised football games when some logo that isn't really there appears on the TV screen apparently in the middle of the field. In this way the potential for advertising would be doubled...and in those mirrors where reflections of you go on infinitely...like in elevators...the potential would be increased dramatically.

I share [blissmiss]'s reservations - but I'm much more interested in how you'd get the mirrors to behave as you would like.
mcscotland, May 28 2002

Er, paint logos on the mirror?
pottedstu, May 28 2002

scratch the surface of the mirror, then illuminate the "inside" of the glass from the edges.

I guess the idea's ok, but the advertising might get a bit irritating..
yamahito, May 28 2002

       sounds like a hologram...
oxygon, May 29 2002

This might be possible with polarized light or polarizing filters on the mirror. By changing the angle of the filters, you could selectively cancel out certain reflections.

Thank you. I just stumbled on this site early this morning, and it has a higher laugh/page ratio than anything I've seen in years. I was laughing so hard, both T-shirt sleeves were damp, and my dog was giving me worried and shameful glances.

I'm chivalrous, shall I do it for her?

Sorry that's annoying. Shall I delete and replace with (i will not use the s word)*10^100 ?
NickTheGreat, May 29 2002

       <pedant>chivalry: honor code in battle

go look up stuff concerning gentilesse - you are gentil.</pedant>

and yes, although 10^2 would be enough.
yamahito, May 29 2002

Surely chivalrous is gentilesse toward the fairer sex?
NickTheGreat, May 29 2002

no, chivalry refers exclusively to one's behaviour in combat or war; it's up there with ironic and fulsome in my list of most-misused words..
yamahito, May 29 2002

Right, shall I go get my English teacher fired then?

       -----------

       Bliss: no problem :D
NickTheGreat, May 29 2002

NicKThe: yup, go for it, it's always fun when you know something the teacher doesn't - see if you can get an apology out of him when he finds out you *are* right!
yamahito, May 29 2002

It's a she, and I will never have another English lesson ever again! I'll never have to speak to her again after I finish my GCSEs, but If I bump into her saggy-breasted self I will mention it :-p
NickTheGreat, May 29 2002

Great thing about this site - you learn something new every day. I didn't know that about the word chivalrous. I agree with you about irony - it gets bandied about with seemingly unrestrained abandon.
stupop, May 29 2002

I abandoned irony for conceit years ago.
reensure, May 29 2002

well, i have to admit it's a lot less clear cut with chivalry than the other two; as for Irony I liked an old comment here (can't remember who said it):

       Irony:
Like coppery or silvery.
what you've discovered must be based on Boron.
yamahito, May 29 2002

       //and yes, although 10^2 would be enough//

[yamahito]: Clearly what I said. I have to go now...... #Swift footsetps exit stage right into distance#
NickTheGreat, May 29 2002

I think you're actually wrong about the word chivalry [yamahito]. I've looked it up in a couple of dictionaries and all of them mention politeness, gallantry towards women or words to that effect in the definition.
stupop, May 30 2002

stupop: yeah, like I said it's not as clear cut as some of the others. Let me assure you, however, that these words originally entered the language through misuse.

So, i'm behind the times by 300 years, so what?
yamahito, May 30 2002

       How ironic.
stupop, May 30 2002

       <sticks tongue out at stupop>
yamahito, May 30 2002

       Oh, the Iron knee
thumbwax, May 30 2002

       [yamahito]: yes
NickTheGreat, May 30 2002

I've built this system with a big electronics company. It works really well: actually it's the only medium that can count the number of recipients. if you're interested, contact me @ downunder advertising in Amsterdam, Holland.
