Elite runners who run on normal running tracks suffer unspeakable knee and ankle damage from spending so much of their lives only running around curves to the left. This can be avoided by the use of a figure-of-eight running track which would have equal amounts of left and right-handed bends. The cross-over
point won't be an issue as very rarely is someone a full half-lap behind the front of the race and when it does happen that two people meet at the cross-over I'm sure they can both be polite about it and avoid any incident.

Have press button traffic lights like a pelican crossing so the runners have to wait for the green man before they can proceed. The lights can be biased so that one direction is always green and the orthogonal direction is always red, until the button is pressed - at which point a random countdown timer starts before the lights change. |

Put a bridge in the center for my bun. It should have a very gentle slope and the extra distance should be accounted for. |

Existing tracks could be retained by having everyone simply turn around and run the opposite way each lap. |
