Without
Parts of the Earth are now just not there, what is humanity to do? | |
All over the earth patches of black anomally are forming for a reason unseen. Light doesn't reflect, energy given is just gone. It is a black cliff into nothingness. Walking in looks like reality has hazily blurred surrounding buildings , landscape into a matte nothing. Walk to far and ...
The patches
seem stable with a range of sizes from wardrobes to large motorway interchanges .The total global volume seems constant but occasionally some do retract leaving a plasma fused indent only to pop up somewhere else. Scientists have their task and will try to take measurements and form hypotheses, what will the rest of Humanity do?
The plot will be the fall out that transects all levels of society from business boardroom , school yard (scared kids, worried teachers and parents), governmental decision making and the chat from those whom guard the barriers. Society is deeply woven and the different levels will effect each other. And of course the criminals now have a way to get rid of stuff and people without forensic trace.
People have heavy sadness as love ones are gone without a single inkling of knowing. The world is now fundamentally changed and there is now something real and tangible that is totally beyond our view and understanding. This is global phenomena so will cultural and religious thinking come together or start blaming each other?. Does humanity find some facts or just come to terms living on the edge of nothing?
Some have the knowing but will never get to say, can rest go on without?

Sounds a bit like FlashForward. |
End-of-season-one-cliffhanger: it is discovered that the patches of darkness are sentient, like in Hoyle's "The Black Cloud" Theme music: a short instrumental clip from Pink Floyd's "Us and Them", to remind people of the line "...with, without..." |

I've never liked movies/series that strongly emphasize not giving answers as a plot point. It smacks of lazy writing. |
FlashForward sounds like the plot is about knowing. This is more about humanity without knowing and ranges of human psychology to deal with a unfathomable phenomenon. Complexity of real relationships is probably main basis of good writing. |
Ultimately humanity would just incorporate the zones in daily life and live on. There might be a lot of very depressed, drunk scientists. |

Do air molecules go through? If they can't come back, then
air would stream through like a giant vacuum cleaner. |
Nice, a doom scenario of the earth on a large scale but a plus for scientists needing vacuums for experiments. Maybe cementing over is one of the government subcommittee's strategies. |
Energy can't escape but maybe there's a mass-momentum threshold for gaseous atoms, molecules. Below the threshold no effect is present. |
This is where the writing is difficult because of the inconsistency of trying to create a reality that has no measurable physical reality and no secondary effects. Mass of earth reduces, orbit changes, weather patterns change, radioactive isotopes have reduced half-lives all problems with loss of energy and mass. |
Orbits of satellites about Earth (including the Moon) will change, but
Earth's orbit about the Sun should remain the same, so at least that
won't kill everyone. |
// radioactive isotopes have reduced half-lives // |

Instability in the nucleus must be, to some part, down to interaction with environment. If there is less of all forms of energy in an environment, electrons around the nucleus will behave differently and due to the relationship between electrons and nucleus, the nucleus has different patterns of stress. |
// Instability in the nucleus must be, to some part, down to
interaction with environment. // |
I don't think that's the case. |
There are phenomena like electron and neutron capture, but other than that you are correct. Whether that counts as "interaction" is open to debate. |
I was thinking more subtle energy patterns the effects of energy/stuff passing through that does make one of the major quantized changes, but just makes net zero electrons moves that adds to the shimmer of the electron cloud. |
We would just build bypasses. The black volume would become a motorway monument to these realities without understanding. On formation would be the main life taker however inconvenient. |
// People might notice if a section of the M4 was turned into a black hole purely on road planning. "Why do we have this major road between the West and London if nobody uses it ?" // |
They might notice, but would they care ? We think not. The M4 east of Reading is pretty much unusable anyway. "... and on the M4 eastbound, there are long tailbacks because* of [A truck on fire/an accident/a police shooting/breakup of the road surface/three metre long radioactive killer ants/a mysterious blue police box/an unexplained black void/climate change protestors] and drivers are advised to take alternative routes ..." |

*this is the point where the driver's brain switches from "listen to radio" mode to "jab angrily at SatNav" mode. The remainder of the message is ignored. |

[AusCan531] How does science get done without data? |

Ask the clmate change mob, they seem to rely on that method- conclusions in the absence of facts... |
