I totally wanted to mix super fast growing Kudzu and marijuana plant for super growing goodness

But what about Pot and Algae hybrid.

       Well, if you're going to go down that road, how about a tumbleweed variant for us out west ?

       Perhaps all you really need to do is transplant the genes that make THC

       Only a matter of time before that happens. Then again, maybe it already has.

       First if all, cannabis grows pretty fast as it is. Not kudzu fast, but fast. I'm watching some grow right now.

       Next, the only thing cannabis and kudzu have in common is that they're plants. Within the kingdom, they're not even kissing cousins. Also, kudzu contains a number of compounds that mimic estrogen and other human hormones, so don't eat the brownies unless you want nice big breasts (or a mustache, if you're the type that comes pre-equipped in the mammary department).

       Finally...algae? Really? Do you know much about botany?

       Okay, I'll take it seriously. Plants hybridized with marijuana won't necessarily get you high (or even contain cannabinoids). The psychoactive compounds in cannabis are produced as a function of the flowering cycle; mess with that and what you end up with isn't pot. I successfully grafted a hops vine onto a cannabis indica plant (those two _are_ cousins), brought it to full flower, harvested, dried, and cured it, and all I got in the end was a small batch of homebrew beer that tasted vaguely of turpentine. Still trying to do the reverse, grafting sensi onto a hops vine. No surviving subjets yet.

       I'd carry out some home research for you, but I can't splice a plant that doesn't have a stem.

       // a small batch of homebrew beer that tasted vaguely of turpentine //

       You invented Budweiser, and we claim our five dollars.

       We consider that [MB] might have the most insight in this area, as long as Sturton doesn't get involved. His attempt to hybridize magic mushrooms with vampire bats was all too successful; if we hadn't been invited to afternoon tea that day and been able to instantly deploy deflector shields and directed-energy weaponry, the history of your species could have been very different.

       I am flattened. By a reasonably remarkable coincidence, one of the synthetic biology projects that I and some colleagues have been exploring is making yeast or bacteria that produce various cannabinoids. It is in principle doable, not by hybridising species, which is generally a non starter, but just by building the relevant synthetic pathways into a handy organism like yeast.

       One application would be cannabinoid-containing beer. A more marketable/fundable option is to produce specific cannabinoids for pharmacological use.

       //the history of your species could have been very different// it already is.

       No, Budweiser tastes like soap. Dos Ekkes would taste a bit like turpentine, if it didn't taste so strongly of water.

       I'm told that cannabeer exists in various forms around the world, but if it's anything like mine turned out it's not worth the bother.
Alterother, Sep 20 2014

       If Budweiser tasted like soap that would be a vast improvement.

       If Budweiser tasted like something - anything - that would be a vast improvement.

       If...hang on, can you do the same with mosquitoes and nicotine, if I can catch enough, dry them out and smoke, a very reasonable revenge..
not_morrison_rm, Sep 21 2014

       Nicotine is a very effective insecticide, and incidentally extremely toxic to cats. A wonderfully versatile molecule ...

       Glad to see you coming round to my way of thinking, [8th].
MaxwellBuchanan, Sep 21 2014

       It wasn't as if any persuasive eloquence or impassioned advocacy were needed; the simple statement "extremely toxic to cats" was more than sufficient...

       //extremely toxic to cats. A wonderfully versatile molecule ...//

       As is Lily pollen, apparently. Someone should build a database of known caticides for.... concerned parties.

       // caticides //

       Sp. "Felicides".

       // Someone should build a database //

       The CDC have a remarkably useful database of such toxic agents <meaningful cough>.

       My father is such a database. Much to the Borgs' dismay, he applies his superpower for the good of all animalkind, including cats.

       But also dogs. Many, many dogs.
