Weather warner

It's the time of the year...

... when there's a good chance that it could be raining cats 'n dogs outside when you go out for lunch. But as your office builder has been very successful in isolating you from the vagaries of weather (read: you are not close to a window), you have no idea whether it actually is. And you don't want to walk around carrying an umbrella if you don't need it, no more than you like the idea of getting soaked, or coming back up 3 floors to get the umbrella.

Enter the remote weather warner. Small screens, spread out at strategic locations throughout the office, indicate the prevailing weather conditions using appropriate colourful icons. Umbrella, sunglasses, snowflake. Also, this could serve to notify everybody of the rare 15 minutes of sunshine, so that the whole office can stampede out in time to catch it.

(I guess you can deduce where I currently live...)

Networked webcam on the front of the building ?

Fuzzy logic linked to a temperature sensor, calendar, moisture sensor, anemometer and optionally a webcam. Package the whole thing in a box that you put on the roof and plug into your network... and DrBob's yer uncle.

thumbwax - I don't really care what the average weather in my part of the country is like this afternoon - I care about my street, right now. If the sun is out, I'd rather take my 10min break now than later and catch the sun. Knowing that we will have partial cloud cover wouldn't help me much.

I think the temperature & moisture sensors (+ some kind of solar cell as sun detector) would do the job just fine

       Do you not have windows?
angel, Nov 22 2002

angel - Well, not really... I sit in the middle of the floor (it's a trading floor type place) and can't really see the weather from where I am. I could of course get up and go check the weather now and again but I am fundamentally a lazy person.

Ask for a new desk-place. Tell them you suffer from agorophilia, and need to have a view otherwise you'll do something strange with futures, or derivatives or something.

Sometimes (only certain days of the year, and for a few minutes at a time) we get what I call "third order sunshine" - reflected from the building across the courtyard, and then in through our window. The angles need to be just right though, and of course you actually need sunshine for that.
