The munitions launcher is a low-velocity smoothbore mortar. Each round is a hollow tube, with a detachable nosecone/parachute attached to the payload. Deployment is similar to a flare: when the round reaches peak altitude, the parachute is deployed and the casing falls away. Upon touching the ground
the nosecone/parachute is detached from the weasel's collar, allowing it to have fun in the enemy's encampment.
Trials are being conducted, and we expect to have the misfire problems sorted out shortly, for the skunk-munitions.

There are some excellent propellants available now, with extremely attenuated launch signatures. The Wallop rocket, used for flare dispensing, is a prime example. |

Presumably the Gentle Tap or Minor Spanking rockets have even less visible signatures. |

The point is to be able to release a flare over the enemy's position without revealing your own position (by a launch trail). |

The enemy probably knows you're there anyway, but not exactly where. If you can see them (via the flare) then it's possible (for instance) to direct an artillery fire plan with great accuracy (unless US forces are involved). A small patrol can approach an enemy position, illuminate it, and safely withdraw in the confusion resulting from a sudden bright light and a lot of unpleasant explosions. |

[8/7] I had envisioned an accelerometer on the casing which activates a custom-moulded air-bag to spread the acceleration around; "discarding", though I don't really see any big advantage to either method. |
