Four or five sun shade rings (the metal ring that folds or
flips
back
into position) are hooked together and are held in place
and
prevented from opening by
chords attached to the umbrella
rod. These tension chords replace the umbrella spikes.
There's no way this umbrella can turn upside
down, and
it lasts
for
years although cheaper to make than a standard
umbrella and
much
less parts.

But then you have all the cords in your face when you use the unbrella, which is (probably) the precise reason for the existing "compression" style framework. |

Not necessarily. They can be in the upper part where the
spikes are today. |

Yesterday we had a muddy end of dust-storm rain. We saw a
woman running in high-heeled shoes then standing at a red
light and crossing the road without noticing her overturned
umbrella. My phone takes ages to bring on the camera, so I
missed the chance to take a picture. |
