Works with a magnet for tow trucks, has straps for attaching on top
of truck's payload, or permanently installed on the truck or bus
roof.
This piece of hardware connects to mobile-eye, waze or google
maps, and prevents bridge crashes.
This idea follows a discussion with a tow-truck owner
who told me
of the dangers he faces daily. See link

Some of these are repetitions from different angles. The best one is the last one [pashute, Aug 10 2017]
Truck hit bridge a week after this idea. Driver killed.

Hey!! Changes to the Halfbakery? Is this permitted?! ;-) |
|
|
Jutta, thanks for years and years of fun! We all wish you a
long, healthy and happy life! |

A suitably programmed GPS on the dash could do this, shirley ? No need for external hardware. |
|
|
And how would it know your height and in which lane you
are?
Especially for the constantly changing height of a tow truck? |
|
|
A suitably trained camera could do the lane thing, especially
if it is a Mobileye plugin. But it wouldn't know this vehicle's
height, and what about getting the info about the bridges?
What if something is hanging off it, that yesterday was not?
(And that does happen). |

Then again maybe we can go about it the opposite way!!
Bridge mounted camera sees your truck advancing, recons
the height according to your location (say three stripes on
the road. If there is something wrong it flashes a red light,
and sends a warning message to your waze. |

Or one could erect a hanging bar (known as a clearance bar)
above the street some distance in front of the bridge. |

Last week, a week after I posted this, a truck driver drove
into a bridge on Israel's most congested highway, taking it
down and killing only himself. |

Looking at the video, what is astonishing is not that the truck hit the bridge, but that doing so flipped and brought down an entire span. Did nobody consider adding a few bolts when they built it? |
|
|
There's probably something in Leviticus that says how many bolts
you can use. After all, both Noah's Ark and the Ark of the
Covenant (plus its enclosure) are pretty tightly specified in both
materials and construction. It wouldn't be a surprise if there used
to be a set of engineering drawings at the back ... they probably
got mislaid during the exile in Babylon ... |
