Trousers based upon the recirculating washroom towel principle

Apologies for putting this the pants section, as there didn't seem to be a trousers one. But, I digress.

Anyway, the basic idea is a pair of trousers, working like one of them towel machines they used to have in washrooms. By having rollers at the top and bottom of the trousers and a place to store the excess length, it would be possible to be wearing a pair of jeans or whatever, and at the flick of a switch the rollers would roll the fabric and show a pair of more formal trousers, for example something to wear when opening a new shopping centre.

The rig would also have a heated roller, capable of drying sections out, for rainy days and the wet sections would be continually replaced by dry bits.

I'm sensing topological issues, unless these are a kilt of some kind
RayfordSteele, Mar 09 2012

Hm. Yeah, you could have some issues where the crotch joined.

Topologically, at least, these could be fixed with a complicated sewing and cutting machine mounted to a specially designed codpiece in the front and back, cutting away and stitching shut extra material as the two legs merged and, and cutting open and using that material to patch the resulting hole as the waist area separated into the two legs.

However, you could simply wear only pant /legs/, held up by suspenders with a roller array for each leg, with some manner of waterproof plastic stain- resistant short-shorts covering the remaining area. One could then have some manner of stealth robots following around to project an image of dry, clean pants in the desired color and style over the shorts, creating apparently seamless merging if the shorts were tight enough and the robots closely coordinated.

       Fabric will be an issue.
Might want to go with a crotchet weave.

well I favor nudity yet the rotational scarf bikini appears possible (link)

//Topologically, at least, these could be fixed with a complicated sewing and cutting machine// No need. Simply extend the trousers into one additional dimension, whereupon the 3D component of the trouserage becomes both linear and continuous.

The only drawback of this would be that, if you accidentally turned them inside out, you'd be trapped forever.

Me, I just come up with the ideas...

       //Continuous Clothing [pocmloc, flag, delete, Mar 10 2012] //

Haha my time machine works better than your time machine, as borderline recursive time war starts merely in order to have been the one to post first.
not_morrison_rm, Mar 10 2012

You know, the best way to fight these brushfire wars is with mercenaries, and I come equipped with flame- resistant trousers...

I'm not sure this idea is the right approach, but let me state my general enthusiasm for the "trousers based upon..." concept as a whole.

Forget the continuous cutting and sewing machine, just invoke a continuous loop zipper of some fashion.
RayfordSteele, Mar 11 2012

Too much potential for recursive genital mishap.

[nmrm] whose idea was that time machine gag in the first place anyway?
pocmloc, Mar 11 2012

//whose idea was that time machine gag in the first place anyway?//

Mea culpa, it was me, after someone posted almost exactly the same idea kind of a wood cube fabber (see link) about 12 hours after I had.
not_morrison_rm, Mar 12 2012

actually theres a swirl up one leg, half circle around the middle then reverse then swirl to the other leg version that I think is possible. Also the skirt version of Eschers amorphosis on vertical rotation with colors could actually be authentically fashionable
beanangel, Mar 12 2012

//Also the skirt version of //

Hmm. skirts would be easier, along with kilts, handy for family tartan on one side and high visibility fabric on the other to aid location by mountain rescue teams.

But, thinking about it...recirculating socks, which pass through a UV microbe killer strip should stay fresh longer. You'd have to remember to lift your foot up at the appropriate moment, or it'd just jam the mechanism.
