Christmas and New Year are spaced inconviently - the four
days between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve are a sort of
dead zone. Some companies are in business during this
interval because there's no legitimate reason to stay closed,
but little useful work gets done.
So, I'd like to propose
that we institute the national
celebration of Thomas Becket Day, to commemorate his
assassination on December 29th, 1170.
Assuming that the Thomas Becket Day's Eve is set aside for
preparation, and that the day after Thomas Becket Day is
reserved for reflection, this should fill most of the gap
between Christmas and New Year.

How about a Samuel Beckett day instead? This would
naturally be in tribute to his unpublished masterpiece:

Unfortunately, Sam Beckett had the poor taste to die
3 days before Christmas. If he'd hung on for a week
or so... |
