The seat rapidly clamps down on the occupant on the occurence of an audible mobile phone ringing carried by that occupant. Seat lets go 5 minutes after the ringing stops.

About the only thing worse than people receiving cell calls in the theatre/restaurant, is people playing with their ring tones in public. How many times more do I have to hear 'Ode to Joy' (badly) before I break? |

Alternatively, install the mechanism proposed by Wishy-Washy (played by Gerard Kelly, Brookside fans!) in a panto I went to this year - the seat of the transgressor (in the original format, the person(s) who failed to get up to and participate in the final singalong) would open and a "wee feather would pop up and tickle you on the bum." |

while i love the concept, and as a theatre producer i would dearly love to have one in my theatre, i think a device which prevents the offender from turning off the phone is problematic: phone keeps ringing until voicemail picks up. under normal circumstances, the person srambles for the phone and silences it after a few rings, thus keeping the noise to a minimum... |
