Everything on the menu and from the bar is uniquely single-sourced from one animal, tree, patch of earth, plant, etc.

Wear your sweater for discounts. Bring your sheep.

It all comes from the sun. Easy.

I'm already pretty sure my steak came from a single cow... the corn from a single ear if it's fresh. My single malt scotch, single pot still Irish whiskey, and single barrel bourbon also meet this requirement, although a bar that sells these offerings exclusively is going to be very expensive. I'm not sure I get what's new here.

The thing is, I understand you can start with, say, a cow. Call it Ermintrude. You can get a steak, cheese, shoes, a horn spoon, jelly, etc. but I am less clear which part of the cow is used to get broccoli, or wine, or do we just not bother with that stuff?

Pertinax's link reminds me of a friend who told me about his experience living in Kenya for a short while. There was a car accident and people fell out of the car and where lying on the road dead. Traffic continued as usual with the drivers avoiding the dead bodies while waiting for the police and rescue services to arrive. That was the end of my pastoral image of Kenya and its calm people.

I remember reading a news story (from the BBC or Guardian if I recall correctly) about a petrol tanker truck overturning in Kenya once. Dozens of locals flocked toward the wreckage, not with concern in their hearts to check on the driver, but with buckets in hand to steal as much of the petrol as they could carry. As they were swarming around it, some genius decided to light a cigarette and... well, it didn't end that well for them. And that was the end of my pastoral image of Kenya and its calm people.

Yep, I just looked it up. 2009. Over 110 people killed and over 200 injured in that explosion.

[pocmloc] You get your broccoli, wine, etc the same way you always did, but it comes from a strictly delineated patch, or shrub, or animal, or settling pond that is lovingly cared for as the desired item matures. As my comment on xenzag’s sheepish post says, items are not excluded by type; only by multiple origin. If you can’t get enough cucumbers from the same vine or dill from the same bush, or salt from the same sea, or vinegar from the same barrel, you will just have to do without pickles. We’re very strict about that.

I’ll let [pashute] comment on the strictures on steaks with butter from Ermintrude.

You have to think in broad, poorly-defined, species non-specific generalities to get the full import of Kashruth. You will never fully comply with the dietary rules, because it is impossible. As are all rules. That’s the thing about rules. Catholicism assumes we all show up sinful so you get a head start in violating the rules, and a neat method for clearing your account. The rabbis just assume you will trip up (everyone does) and have to consult with them in order to clear your slate. Same deal. I think every religious hierarchy has built a carrot-and-stick version of this universal model. Some are very beautiful.

I always presume the existence of a prohibition is evidence that plenty of people are doing it. And if plenty of people are doing it, then presumably it is not that much of a problem, except for the rule-makers.
