The word "How?" springs to mind at this point.

Robotic Garden Wildlife

Who needs real animals when you have these?

I can't be bothered to look after all my plants and other weird biology experiments all the time. Why not somebody create Robotic Garden Wildlife (tm), to do work for me.

Robotic bees can plant seeds. Robotic helicopter birds can do watering. Robotic garden gnomes can do the raking, and Robotic goldfish can clean/airate the pond.

These will be powered by solar cells, plain batteries, mains power, or water power in the case of the robo-fish.

Additions could include:

Robotic hedgehogs, badgers, wombats etc, to take care of pesky flies and snails, robotic sheep to cut lawns, or robotic rabbits to cut smalled lawns, and robotic pigs to take stuff from your kitchen to your compost heap.

And before anyone asks what happens to the grass cuttings once the rabbit/sheep is full, the rabbit goes to the compost bin and gets rid of it, or it will put it in a corner of the garden, or something like that.

If plants built robots, this is what I think they'd look like. [jutta, Apr 10 2006]

... And on that farm he had a roboduck, 01010!

With a 'blip blip' here, and a 'whirr whirr' there, here a 'blip', there a 'whirr', everywhere a 'blip whirr'

I just got over my fear of clowns, and then you come along with your robotic garden gnomes, with their sharp hats and beards, vicious little hands...glassy wee eyes..AAAAHHH!!!

Cute. Ever read Philip K dick's "Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep"?
moomintroll, Apr 02 2005

       [moomintroll]Nope, but it sounds interesting.

You would like it. Find a copy and read it. And after that, watch "Blade Runner", you won't regret that either.
wagster, Apr 02 2005

       [wagster] Hmmm. Sounds interesting...

[moPuddin] Sorry for scaring you. Is there a word for 'fear of garden gnomes'? If there isn't, there should.

[moomintroll] Can you tell what generation of robot trolls they are by their glassy eyes? (Bladerunner reference)

who needs robot animals, when you can use real ones?

I suppose they might not be quite so well behaved, but I wouldn't be surprised if after a nasty shower, some of your robot bees start trying to pollenate the neighbours dog.

Maybe a big robot arm could be employed to automatically do the weeding, or at least controlled from your back room with one hand whilst lazily supping a cup of hot tea and doing the crossword.

       //Robotic hedgehogs, badgers, wombats etc.//

Ahh, that annoying abbreviation that is etc...

Anyhow, interesting idea. I can’t help feeling that all the metal contraptions buzzing around my garden would destroy the peace, though.
