Paintball hit detection

Using RFID tags to detect painball hits

Each paintball contains many identically Ided tiny RFID tags (when tech cheap enough). A transmitter attached to your body periodicaly pings any tags. If a paintball hits you some of the tags would be stuck in the paint that hit your body. If a paintball hit a rock beside you then the tags will still respond so the system would only trigger if tags were still detected even after you moved a distance away (GPS). True, it’s not perfect in that you could sit in the same spot and the system would not be able to recognize a hit. One or just a few tags (splash from near hit) would not trip the alarm, it would have to be a dozen or more. Grenade hits work as well.

       Um, why?

Oops good Q. I forgot to mention why. In the heat of battle the splat of a paintball may be missed (or ignored), this system helps to prevent that. When I played I had a big hit right in the middle of my forehead and never noticed. Perhaps more experienced players don't have this trouble?

I don't think this is the right approach. If you're not sure you've been hit, ask a friend. If you don't want to have been hit, the paint is too easy to wipe off, tags or no.

       Hey [David], am I hit?
zeno, Apr 11 2005

       Yes, but don't tell anyone...
david_scothern, Apr 12 2005

well it's already $60 a case for paintballs....any idea how much more this would cost? not particularly cost-effective, i'm afraid.

when i last did paintball the guy told us that it was only counted as a hit if we felt it therefore eliminating paintchecks as they take a few secionds,in which time even if you wernt hit,you would be open to getting shot 5 or 6 times but if you shoot someoneand they dont notice, just shoot them a few more times,it worked for me but just a little tip,if ure crouching down and getting shot, dont roll backwards,i got a few shots in the arse cheek and it hurt like nobodys buisness

How would it discriminate so that it doesn't detect the paintballs in your own marker?

You go first. If it looks like fun, then I'll try it.

I had a paintball hit me in the soft rubber chin of my mask. It hurt like a sonofabitch, but somehow it worked its way UNDER the chinpiece when it hit without popping it. I had a shiny new paintball in my mask, and a big ass chin welt to match.

I miss paintball. We should organize a huge Halfbaker's game somewhere.

       Hooray for AfroAssault!

When I played paintball, I got hit in he neck when a ref called me over.

He had thought I was hit, but I wasn't, but as he checked me, he made me stand up, and so then I got hit in the neck, an was out.

       Stupid ref.
DesertFox, Apr 14 2005

Paintball with referees? We don’t have that around here. Are they covered in paint?
Shz, Apr 14 2005

If you made the paintballs out of acid there would be no question as to whether someone was hit or not.
