OD Bomb

Put DEA Seized Drugs Where We Need Them

Every year, the DEA and similar agencies around the world seize hundreds if no thousands of tons of cocaine, heroine and other illicit drugs that are known to have low overdose levels. The military should be converting these drugs into tactical bombs.

Imagine a military need to attack a densely populated area that is too complex to invade with soldiers, but cannot be bombed by conventional method. For instance, if the opposing side took control of The Louvre or the area around The Great Pyramid, Stonehenge, or any other world treasure or ancient wonder, no government would want to be held responsible for its destruction after a war.

Now, realize the solution. Small, guided bombs, carrying a large payload of cocaine or other powdered drug of choice and a small amount of plastic explosives. Detonated fifteen yards above the highest building in the area, it would cause minimal collateral damage. I say collateral because we are at war with the people, not the buildings. The main result would be the spreading of lethal amounts of cocaine to be inhaled by the enemy. After a bombing, leave the area untouched for a day. When invading troops arrive, wearing gas masks of course, Anyone not killed by an overdose would have been killed by one of their comrades, high as a kite.

This means less destruction, safer military urban movements, and most valuable, no rebuilding the cities of our enemies.

Cocaine - "minimum lethal dose is 1.2g" http://www.sdrl.com/druglist/cocaine.html

Stonehenge would be the most popular place in the UK with ready made snorting tablets 'n all.

Calum, thanks for the link, I wasn't sure where to find overdose statistics. This idea was posted without much thought. Considering the amount of seized drugs, imagine the quantity of bombs that could be produced in a given year, as well as the cost effiancy!
jc112704, May 26 2006

Well, the link isn't necessarily reliable, other links saying things like "no-one really knows" and "1.2g figure is an estimate/guess." It also doesn't specify the method of intake (snort, inject, eat, smoked) so it's probably not that useful in the circumstances.

I would hazard, however, the following:
a. the bomb would have to be constructed to ensure that the drug dispersal was mechanical, rather than explosive, as I imagine that burned cocaine is not so useful.
b. that injecting coke (for instance) would be the best way to acheive a lethal/knockout dose. Dispersing it into the air - the wind and the rain - is not likely to result in anyone inhaling a lethal dose.
c. that this idea has been suggested here before.
d. people on cocaine don't usually kill other people, though it may make them statistically more likely to commit a crime or so. I would think that getting everyone fucked up on methamphetamine or similar mentalism-inducing drug.

e.the enemy are wearing gas masks.

Yeah, you're going to need to use a lot of cocaine to actually kill anyone. It might be a good way to persuade lots of people to gather in a single area though (each of them curiously holding rolled-up banknotes and looking feverishly excited) - It would be like an episode from Gilbert Shelton's "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers".

As for comrades getting high as kites and going on murderous rampages, I can only assume that you saw that in a movie, or a bad '80s cop show, or an episode from Gilbert Shelton's "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers".

See toxicity in the first link. Note symptoms of cocaine intoxication.
jc112704, May 26 2006

Yep, read that //Symptoms of chronic cocaine use include psychiatric disturbances, rhinitis with possible nasal septum perforation, shortness of breath, cold sweats, tremors, violent protective behavior, distorted perception, tachycardia, tachypnea, dyspnea, and hyperkinetic behavior. Signs of cocaine intoxication can include profound CNS stimulation with psychosis and repeated grand mal convulsions, ventricular arrhythmias, respiratory dysfunction with Cheyne-Stokes breathing, respiratory paralysis, hyperthermia, and even coma.//

Which translates to them potentially experiencing feelings of confusion, have a painful nose, exhibit shallow breathing, cold sweats, a tendency to shiver, potential 'violent protective behaviour', an inability to judge distance and perception, raised heatbeat, hyperventilation, breathlessness, and the tendency to run about fidgeting.

While it does mention this 'violent protective behaviour', that doesn't necessarily translate to a murderous rampage. Meh - it doesn't matter. You really should take a look at the FFFBs though.

Ah yes, the Furry Freak Brothers - "Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope".

Although the episode about the tumbleweeds campaign to regain and rule the highways is priceless.

i thought this was what neutron bombs were for. although i'm not sure of the fallout for one.

I want to be on the losing side.

[wagster] is that the side that has to clean up?
tcarson, May 26 2006

I dunno... which side lost in Iraq?

//After a bombing, leave the area untouched for a day.//Surely you'd want to go in immediately, rather than risk attacking a bunch of coke users the day after a binge - have you seen how grumpy those people can be?

Seriously, this idea has larger holes than an addict's nose. Easily countered by gas masks, highly questionable re. delivery mechanism and have you considered the wisdom of spraying an area you wish US ground forces to operate in with recreational drugs? They appear to have enough trouble avoiding indiscrimant killing, leashing of prisoners, defecation on religious texts etc without the additional temptations caused by coating their operational theatre with coke and smack.
