Many volatile hostage situations are only made worse by threatening the captors with violence or imprisonment. Why should they give up if they know damn well that they're gonna be screwed from behind without a reach-around as soon as they drop their weapons? (sorry for the mental image there, but it's
a
fitting description of their options)
I propose a brightly-colored easter-egg-shaped grenade that, when activated, fills the room with laughing gas. This would relieve the criminals of their tension and make them more prone to manipulation. Simply send in a SWAT team dressed as clowns with brightly colored weapons designed to look like toys or balloons. Someone under the influence of NOS is going to take one look at a clown with a toy gun and fall on the ground laughing.

the other one i have seen (but still

Sorry, but that idea is hopelessly naive (sp?). Simply getting everyone stoned will make the world peaceful right until the effects of the bomb wear off, and then they'll go right back to killing each other. The idea here is make 'em deliriously happy, then incarcerate the criminals before it wears off. |

It would be awesome until you killed all the hostages with heart conditions. You know - anesthesiology IS a specialized medical field for a reason. |

The Russiansbeat you to this, and they did it right. The reason that none of the terrorists in that Chechen hostage school thing set off their bombs is that the Russians flooded the building with aerosolized fentanyl, which is a superfast superpotent relative of morphine. Everyone dropped within a second or two, but there were a load of folks ready to rush the place with syringes of naloxone, which counters opiate overdose. They gave it to the hostages as fast as they could, but still lost quite a few - about 100 of 750. Nowhere near as many as if the bombs had gone off.
