Music-Car Speed Coupling

Tape plays faster when you drive faster

The speed of your dashboard tape deck is controlled by the speed of the car. It’s calibrated so that it plays normally when you go 60 mph.

If you drive really fast it sounds like the Chipmunks. When you’re cruising slowly through town it sounds like Leonard Cohen (unless it really is Leonard Cohen, in which case it sounds sub-Leonard Cohen.) When you drive in reverse you hear satanic messages.

Okay, it's funny, so croissant. I don't want Satanic messages, so fishbone.

normal speed for most people is less than 60 mph. And this encourages people with a fondness for the Chipmunks and/or weird sounds (ie me) to break the speed limit. But despite all this...i actually laughed out loud, so +.

To rewind your tape you have to drive backwards? "Why do you keep driving up and down the driveway" "I really like that song"
Worldgineer, Apr 23 2003

[+] Add this to the stereos that automatically turn up the volume as you go faster, and you have real comedy. Someone with one of these would go faster to speed up the music, while the music crescendos. They keep going faster and faster along with the music (not necessarily intentionally, just because faster and louder music is more exciting), until finally they're flying by everyone else on the road and they either get pulled over or crash spectacularly.

[igirl], what world do you live in? Seems like everyone within a few hundred miles of where I live usually goes at least 70 on highways, if not faster.

Those slow-driving senior citizens could listen to speed metal and never know the difference. The inside of their cars would always sound like Perry Como, no matter what was playing.

       Croissant!

I had a discussion about this the other day. A car record player run off the main engine. It would have a transmission gear system to keep the record playing at "aproximatly" the appropriate speed. as you accelerate youd hear the music speed up... speed up... speed up... then slow. when the record player shifts gears. and so forth.

[tekym] not being able to drive yet (neither can my friends), i speak of my parents/other familial adults. Actually, not my dad...scary stories...

To what? Downshift? I downshift at 65...

Fishbone, because it's only slightly different from soem comedian's skits.
belg4mit, Apr 24 2003

That, and its yet another encouragement for poorly trained teen drivers to drive at ridiculous speeds.
krelnik, Apr 24 2003

At Discovery Place (science geek's paradise) in Charlotte, NC they have a stationary bicycle that you ride that does exactly this. They play INXS' "New Sensation" even though that song is at least 15 years old. However, it plays the song in concurrence with the speed that you pedal. Does that make this 3/4 baked? Croissant for the Leonard Cohen mention just because of Jeff Buckley's remake of "Hallelujah".

Rach 3 is formidable just sitting still. I don't much like it, though. Other of his work I like much more.
bristolz, Apr 24 2003

Could be fun the other way 'round, too. Let the tempo of the music influence the speed of the car. You could have speed zones determined by music styles. School zones could require waltzes, freeways might call for rock n roll, and country roads would use, well, soothing music that wouldn't traumatize halfbakers. Have a full speed croissant, with your choice of accompaniment.

And I thought I was the only one who liked Rachmaninov.

Well, that's certainly egalitarian of you. ;-)

Sorry [UnaBubba], post updated - mollifying musical modifications. I hope.

       what is tape deck?

i've always wanted some way of making the music keep beat with the white lines passing, or my windshield wipers. in fact i've adjusted my speed before just to get the lines passing the car at just the right intervals to go along with the beat...this is only effective at night tho. sometimes you can adjust the wiper speed but then there's that whole vision thing.

I did this once by accident trying to install an 8-track player in my friend's truck. More tied to engine RPM than speed. "Stayin' alive" will never sound the same again.
richp, Apr 19 2004

This is a really bad idea; it's a well-known fact that the tempo of the music a driver is listening to affects the way they drive. Linking the two together would make things even worse.

Unless you made it an inverse relationship, so that the music slows down as you get faster?

Time dialation explains your effect, orangejon.
