Region specific sponsorship for global TV events | |
Televised global sporting events (such as the World Cup) make a
huge amount of money from television advertising.
During commercial breaks, these are usually specific to whatever
country or region the game is being broadcast, however during
the game itself, the pitchside advertisements are
not so specific,
and so for a large number of viewers are completely
irrelavant.
Most of these advertisements are shown on digital boards, so I
propose that a number of different images be cycled very rapidly
(several times a second) with each image showing a region
specific brand.
This would then be recorded on a very high speed camera, and
each region could broadcast the specific frames that relate to
their area.
In it's simplest form, a football match between two countries
would have two separate sets of advertisements that would
alternate.
If the board switched between the 2 every 60th of a second, a
camera capturing 60 frames a second could produce the 2
broadcasts at a respectable 30 frames a second.
The number of regions that could be catered for would only be
limited by the refresh rate of the boards and the speed of the
camera.
One downside would be that supporters in the ground would not
see the advertisements, but the extra TV exposure would more
than make up for this.
Supporters could be made to wear special glasses that are tuned
into the board cycle, but that's another idea for another day!

There was a system a few years back (invented by the French, IIRC) that simply had green screen billboards at the ground, and the regional ads were mixed in, properly corrected for geometric distortions and perspective, in real-time. |

But this is nicely different, though would probably fall foul of broadcast rules to protect photo-sensitive epileptics[+] |

photosensitive epilepsy tablets! |

Isn't there some weird advertising thing in Formula 1 which replaces barcodes printed on cars and overalls with cigarette advertising in the countries in which tobacco advertising is allowed? In the UK we just see the barcodes. A similar system could be used for localisation of advertising for other sports. |

Ian - interesting, given people's inability to distiguish barcodes by sight. This would cause people to associate all barcodes with tobacco. Or maybe it wouldn't - I'm not sure using 'generic' images for your product (e.g. a house, for house insurance products, or the US flag for anything remotely associated with the USA) works. |

I know this isn't the greatest idea ever, and that buns aren't
that be all and end all, but still I cannot believe this is
struggling to compete with 'shaving Whales'.
Things have obviously changed drastically in the few years I
have been away from the bakery!
