All new restaurants wishing to offer Drive-thru service must have one extra lane constructed, which is NOT allowed to have an ordering kiosk installed, for the express purpose of preventing patrons from becoming trapped and unable to leave if the line is either completely stalled or moving at an unreasonably
slow pace.
That is all.

Not bad. I got stuck in a drive through and had to wait about ten minutes with barely any movement because their crew was short. When I got to the window while looking down reaching for my card I said, nicely enough, guess youre kind of short today eh? Then I looked up. |

The guy at the window as a midget. Quickly saying I mean short staffed, like not enough workers
didnt make it any better, kind of made it worse actually. Felt really bad. |

Ever got stuck in a drive through after realizing you forgot your wallet at home and can't even order anything? |
Haven't lived through that, but still would be better than accidentally insulting a small person. |

He knew I didn't mean it but still... |

Wonder how they deal with requests for "a large orange juice" in Israel? |

That's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let us know how it works out for you! |

I don't go to a spectacular amount of drive thrus, but aren't the lane lines just painted on? |

In very few. Most of them, they're hemmed in with a concrete curb, often with trees or bushes behind the curb. Weird Al Yankovic wrote a nearly 11 minute song called "Trapped in The Drive-Thru." |
I wonder why? Curbs cost more, and what are they worrying about? people paying and leaving without the food? |
Well, probably the opposite to be honest, since you order before you pay. They want to make sure someone doesn't order, then leave without paying OR taking the freshly prepared food with them. It's also likely a matter of economics. They have limited space on their plot of land, and an unused lane on one side of the building forces the building to be constructed further from that edge of the property and reduces the amount of parking spaces available on the other side. So I can see a couple of reasons why my idea would REALLY rub restaurant owners the wrong way, but there are ways to mitigate the issue of customers leaving after ordering, and sometimes the restaurant takes so long to get the food out after it's ordered, I feel they owe it to the customers to let them leave. |

You could have the cars lined up nose to the kerb, with space behind to allow any one to leave at any time. There could be a convenient portal for the customers to walk from their car and order and receive their comestibles. That way the only queue would be waiting for the chef to prepare the dish that you have requested. |
