Problem: Sometimes I want to make a quick honk to signal another driver to be alert, move ahead, etc. The horn button on my steering wheel is so stiff that I either don't make any honk at all, or I make a really long honk that sounds angry and aggressive.
Idea: As a driver, I want a trigger (or
triggers) on the steering wheel so that it is easy to send a signal honk to other drivers that need to be alerted.
Here's how it would work:
- On the steering wheel, at the 2 oclock and 10 oclock positions, there are buttons in the positions of where a person's thumbs would go.
- The buttons have a very light touch and don't require much force to activate.
- No matter how long or how hard the button is pushed, it sounds the horn for about 1/10th of a second.

American style horns are terrible. They're so loud and angry you can hear them from miles away, friendly honks are impossible. In most places horns are much softer and used for communication between drivers like "go ahead and pass" or "okay I'm passing" instead of just "GTFO OF MY WAYYY!!!" + |

This would be less angry and aggressive by virtue of its brevity? Would it pulse? Many staccato honks? I could get into that, because currently you must drum on the horn with both fists to accomplish this, which can be dangerous at speed. |

On a motorcycle, the horn is right under your thumb
(usually the left one, for some reason). It takes some
getting used to before you stop bumping it as you get on
and off or just resting your thumb on it as you cruise. I
think putting the horn on the rim of a steering wheel
would cause a lot more accidental honkings. |

Additionally, in the U.S. at least, it is illegal to mount
anything at all on the rim of the steering wheel. This
wasn't always the case, which is why you occassionally find
old cars with "suicide" knobs. |

Farmer John had an idea for an Analogue horn, I think. Not the same, but with a similar goal. |

I agree with [Ling]. Seems like we have done this
before, but my hand is too lazy to look. Now that's
lazy. |
