Home Moat / Lap-Pool

Acts as Moat for Security, As a Lap Pool for Exercise, and as a Lazy River for swimming parties

We can have a moat-shaped pool surrounding our house, which can also serve as a pool for swimming laps. And maybe for summer parties, it can also act as a small Lazy River, if you've ever seen those.

Said pool provides a form of home security, since it presents an additional barrier to cross through, and does so in a very overt way (sometimes it's not about having your house be airtight on security, sometimes it's just about looking more difficult to penetrate than your neighbors' houses, so that any prospective thief passes you over)

You can also use this pool to swim laps around your house, or even just swim back-and-forth along particular segments. Cardiovascular exercise is very good for health, and swimming is a low-impact form of this. Various types of medication benefit from higher blood circulation, which said exercise can provide.

And when holding summer parties, especially for the kids, your moat-pool can also function as a Lazy River for them to float around a looping track. You could probably have water jets on there which you can activate to promote flow in a particular direction.

Moated manor houses https://www.tatler....r-houses-in-england
Mentions swimming in the moat. Some of these have read bridges to drive a car over the moat onto the island; others son't have any flat area within the moat and so access is via a footbridge. [pocmloc, Apr 01 2025]

I've thought of exactly this countless times over the years, especially when I started building my own koi pond/water garden. How wonderful would it look with floating lillies and other aquatic plants, with a Japanese style wooden footbridge? You'd have a tough time getting this approved within city limits. It would be declared a drowning hazard, a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and probably run afoul of prohibitions on rainwater collection.

@21 Quest: You could go shallow on the front-facing portions of the moat. It's usually children that are the focus of any drowning hazard. The deeper parts could be toward the back, where you'd get more privacy swimming lengths back-and-forth. Those changes in depth can add a little variety instead of monotony.

As for mosquitoes and rainwater, those are things that all pools have to contend with, so this is no different.

I'm not sure what to do with a driveway though. I wouldn't want it interrupting the loop/circuit. I guess you could have the moat-pool cutting between the driveway and the house, with a little footbridge to get you over it. Maybe a driveway arranged sideways at the front of the property, with the moat-pool being behind it. Still haven't thought the driveway thing through, and am open to suggestions (except for some military-style bridge-laying vehicle)

sanman, some sort of see-saw with the fulcrum in the middle of the moat that blocks access after entry. This is the moat interesting idea in months.

Not a new idea, see links [-]

Although also not apparently a common idea, probably because it is a very stupid idea [+]

Obviously the driveway needs a drawbridge, with big iron chains to draw it with.

       {[Voice]; definitely, or:
Driveway goes UNDER the moat, to a basement garage (a bit less secure, of course), or
Platform (1 big or 2 narrow ones) rises up from in the moat, to create a temporary "bridge" for the car.
Also, have an emergency entrance to the house IN the moat (around the back, obvs) with a simple mechanically-locked gate to a small pool inside the house.
(I may have thought about this a lot...)

If you want a secretive emergency entrance/exit you'll do better to tunnel to somewhere off-premise.
