Ticks, tocks, gongs, chimes, bells, tugboat whistles, explosions, screams, car crashes, etc. is wide open to the imagination and is user programmable on the hour, half, or quarter hour. |

Or the idea that a grandfather could be projected (optically or mechanically) onto the wall from a clock on the other side of the room. |

The coolest clock that I ever saw (in a museum in Amsterdam) has the image of a guy projected from inside on the clock face, where he erases and draws new clock hands every minute/hour. See link. Not sure if he's a grandfather. |
