Throwing is such an essential part of what makes us human, it
seems
a shame to waste it on the opposite brothels of baseball and
juggling, much in the same way that flying is wasted on the
opposite
brothels of jet manufacturing and bird watching.
There must be some gentle artistic "gay"
middle way. With flying
this would be human-powered flapping flight using semi-rigid body
extension wings, 3d printing, modern materials and lots of
experimenting to create smooth graceful human powered air-
swimming.
With throwing it seems to me there should be some kind of
equivalent middle way -- an art/sport that fully engages the
uniquely human ability to throw, but that doesn't reduce it to the
bare essentials of either speed and accuracy, like with baseball, or
whatever juggling measures, which I guess is more about
management than about the art of throwing.
Gayseball would just be an individual performance sport with
judging
and lots of Slo-mo replay technology, and might use a ball that has
aerodynamic qualities that allow the pitcher to put a real spin on
it,
and then a firework-like aspect to exaggerate the personality of
the
spin.
So the ball itself could be artistically and scientifically colored so
that it produces an interesting visual display when it is thrown,
winged or pitted to exaggerate the spin effects and then have
some
kind of slow break-apart aspect or a small explosive that would
send
equally-interestingly accoutremented ball-lets into a swarming
patern. Computing and fire could be added in at some point just
to
be totally gratuitous.

Isn't this what Ultimate Frisbee is? |
|
|
Isn't Ultimate more about the acrobatics of throwing and the team
element? This would be an individual sport with the emphasis on
what happens after the projectile leaves the hand -- in the beauty of
the arc or rain of movement that can be created. It would be more
like a fireeorks didplay without the fire, although uou could throw that
in at some point. |

Its like baseball with only a pitcher and the goal is to not throw the
ball straight. |
|
|
This reminds me of a children's book I read long ago
as a child. "Horace Higby and the Scientific Pitch". It
was baseball-related, and the goal was to make the
thrown ball do a "double curve". I'm pretty sure such
a thing is not actually possible, but it might be
possible to make the thrown ball do a corkscrew-type
of motion, heh! |
|
|
Left handed pitchers with an unhittable curve ball are already performing artistry and have decidedly artistic temperaments. |

|
All the players bat for the other team? |
|
|
The uniforms are quite striking, though. |

I agree that this is Ultimate Frisbee. Or maybe that freestyle frisbee. I understand the idea of positioning between extremes of functionality and art but I do not think that this position has much to do with gayness even in the broadest sense of the word. |

I don't think I'd want to be the catcher. |
