This suggestion withdrawn due to practical application
issues.
See xenzag's note for how to display any art you want
associated with a particular idea.
(Original idea below)
I understand bakers used to be able to ask moderators
for the
privilage of being able to post thumbnail schetches
to
anybody's
posts.
How about two modifications to that idea?
1- Grant all halfbakers this thumbnail posting ability to
encourage more illustrations of the various inventions
should
the poster want to do that and...
2- Just have it be available for that person's post.
Never wrote Jutta before. Maybe I will.

I have drawn diagrams of some of my ideas but you are right there's not an easy way to post them. Public file sharing services can die over the decades, and my own server seems a bit to unanonymous |
The problem with too much "art" and allowing anyone to
post it is that it would require more active and attentive
participation from the moderators. Basically all the
problems that led to Facebook becoming such an over-
moderated Hellhole. You'll have people posting Facebook
and Instagram memes, nudity, racist caricatures, etc. It
would be the downfall of the HB. |
How about strict limits on the art? Black and white sketches of
the specific idea only? |
And remember, you can only put it on your post, not anybody
else's which I think was what you could do once granted art
posting rights. Might be wrong but that's my understanding. |
I think, perhaps, limiting it to Bakers with at least 5 years
tenure would probably take care of that. |

I don't think it would. The HB isn't FB.
To get an account you need to ask Jutta, so accounts are not an
automatically accessible resource.
To give more weight to that, you could to add additional conditions,
such as requiring a certain number of ideas with a positive ranking
before you could post an image to your own ideas without asking a
moderator. An additional flag per account and the existing level of
moderator oversight should be mostly fine.
I mean, how much link-spam is there currently? Basically none I
think? |
Obviously I can't guarantee that no-one would ever post anything
offensive, but it could be a once-in-an-account-lifetime thing at
most. |
Well, and this is a little, we'll call it "boutique" site. The trans-
global local hangout with a few hundred members at most. I
don't think it's gonna get hit with the stuff Facebook and
Twitter would. Posters trying to sell something would get
boned out of existence. |
Turns out there are issues with this, technical and otherwise.
MFD. |
What's so wrong with simply posting them on
tumblr (as I do)? It means that on another person's
idea, if they don't like the work, they can request
that it's deleted or delete it themselves,
meanwhile the illustration remains intact on the
separate site. |
That's definately the way to proceed, that's what I've always
done as well. The pics on the HB itself isn't doable. |
I wouldn't be so quick to delete this. If you do, we won't be able to
point to it when someone else brings it up in future. |
I'm interested in what the technical issues are. I wondered at first
whether the concern was a rapid increase in data volume. Then I
thought maybe the interface is perhaps arcane - perhaps files need to
have unique names, or maybe specific to the idea ID.
But my money is on the interface being integrated with moderator
functionality; perhaps letting generic users have access would
expose too much - a big security risk. |
Good point. Jutta says there were some practical issues
involved as well as ones mentioned here already. Guess it
wouldn't hurt to leave it up I suppose. |
//tumblr//
I had mine on PhotoBucket, but some-one (an algorithm,
probably...) decided I was using it "for commercial purposes"
(linking here was the only thing I used it for) & blocked them
all. I haven't got around to trying to fix things there.
(Note to self: fix PhotoBucket account.) |

Yeah, you just can't trust free image-hosting sites to survive.
Even if they do, they can drop your images because of too much
activity, or not enough, or because they've decided to start
charging. |
After thinking about this a little, one option is to use a suitable host
as
normal, then use the wayback machine to archive the pages.
Basically feed each image to the 'save page now' link on
archive.org (click the 'web' icon at the top; it's a drop-down menu)
after
uploading, and maybe check back that it's worked later.
It's fiddly, but it now makes archived pages visible immediately, and
I
think it's reasonably likely to survive long-term. |

Wait, who is jutta, and what in the hell is a moderator? :) |
Oh yeah, I think the heart of the idea was in the right place.
Bristolz was such a creative and brilliant person, and her
artwork was awesome. We were blessed to have had her
here. Farmer John's was awesome too. Mine sucks. |
Jutta is the great and powerful Oz of the Halfbakery.
The brains behind this wonderful place. |
The moderators are the folks that help keep the
place halfbakin'. |
My art sucks too, don't feel bad. |
Is Farmer John not with us anymore? |
Doctor, I was kidding. I have actually had the honor of
meeting the supreme being herself (jutta), at a piss-up, I
facilitated when I lived in the bay area. She brought, (drum
roll please...) freshly baked croissants. We sat outside and
watched the hummingbirds and hawks buzz around our
heads for the morning. It was nice to meet all who
participated. (Unfortunately, csea has since departed this
life, and now he is resting in peace. |

As for moderators, one is my good friend for over 20 years
and who was a life saver from the crazy naked man in the
bushes, that I encountered at my old job. |
I thought you knew but obviously I was wrong. I'll set up a
link to the get-together if I can find one. |
LOL! Wow! I was smiling at the pleasant pictures you
were describing till you got to the crazy naked man
in the bushes part. |
What the heck? Glad you're okay. |
Love to see the pictures, sounds like a cool get
together. Sounds like Jutta is much nicer than the
great and powerful Oz. |
I remember seeing a photo of that party! Must have been at least 100 years ago now. |
Doctor, it was a top Mt. Diablo, if you know where that is. |
That place looks incredibly beautiful! I'm familiar
with that area but I've never been to
that particular place. Gorgeous! |
I usually go to the coast or Sausalito Tiburon area
for weekend getaways, but I've gotta check that
place out.
What's the name of the hotel? |
Unless that's your house, in which case I just
realized I'm your
best friend. |
I remember seeing that picture... seems like a lifetime ago. |
It was my girlfriend's house. We were living together in CT
when her mother began to decline so we both moved out to
care for her. She died not long after and Christine inherited it
all. But she chose to return to her property in CT so she sold
it, and I stayed in San Fran and worked as a live-in caretaker.
Hell, I couldn't ever afford to live there. hahaha |
Well, I'll still be your friend even if you don't have a
massive mansion. Most of my friends don't. |
Standards slipping there [doc]. Its OK to be friends with the riffraff but you're not meant to admit it. |
It's okay, I'm riffraff too. I've got my riffraff
riffs down. |
//Riffraff Riffs//
Looks like you just found your DJ name. Well, maybe if it was
still the early '90s... |
Hmm, I could see dropping the bomb beats under that slick.
(Slick: Noun- alternative moniker or nickname, especially
connoting urban street credibility or coolness.) |
(Slick: Also a term I just made up) |
I did get one term in the Webster's dictionary, maybe it's time
to get another one in there. |
