Inspired by loris's idea, but different.

Vendor could zap receipts onto small, wallet sized card (amounts, vendor #, even picture of signature) via infa-red sensor on both cash register and card. You would have an organized list of your transactions that you could print out, or upload into Quicken, by transfering the data to your personal computer.

       That's more like it, izzard.

anything to avoid the 4 ft long receipt the local store gives out...

Honey, I've just scanned your card looking for the video warranty ... what's these 10 receipts for "Entertainment Services" at "The Chicken Ranch"?

nice one [izzard], this is a good, if previously half-baked idea.
neilp, Aug 04 2003

In response to this being 'already baked'; this is an electronic, computer-like device. It has a thin small screen that shows the transaction activity instantaeously (e.g. your signature and the amount on a LED screen). I should have specified the fact it had a screen, however, logically speaking, it would be hard to see a "picture of [your] signature" with-out one. It is not the other idea.

       finally, a good idea

Hmmm. Evaluating MFDs is not always easy. The criterion I use is whether the second idea is so similar to the first that it could easily be expressed as an annotation to that idea.

In this case, I see the core of both this and DiRusso's Receipt Credit Card as being the electronic storage of till receipts in a compact card. The ideas differ in the use to which that information is put and level at which the technology is explained (DiRusso's is a conceptual overview, izzard's deals with the physical technology).

When talking about swiping the card, though, DiRusso doesn't explicitly say that his card is smart. It is possible to read the idea as being an ordinary magswipe card with the receipt data stored remotely. This would not allow izzard's home transfer of data.

On the assumtion that DiRusso may have been talking about a simple magswipe allowing the issuer of the card to store the information, and that izzard is proposing a smartcard which gives the user the information directly, the MFD is withdrawn. Halfbake well.

I love it, but I don't want my receipts flying around the airwaves (IR, RF, or etc.), where some guy with a modified unit in line behind me could record the data, and try to decode it at home later. I think I really want a mag-swipe to get the data, like DiRusso's, but with a screen to make sure it got in there right, like this one, and a removable flash memory chip, like a digi camera. Also, zap online purchases into it, so I don't forget to do them by hand. Auto-load to quicken is a must, through USB.

fog: Not a problem. I'd guessed that this was the case. It made me re-evaluate the MFD. No bad thing so long as I don't have to do it too often.

Arriving late, as usual, but I think the (now withdrawn) [mfd] was justified. If the only thing different about this idea is that the device has a display on it, I think it should be an annotation on the other idea.
krelnik, Aug 05 2003

       It's already on the market.

Nemo- if this device, or one like it is already on the market, can you provide a link to it please?

[+] I had been about to post an idea almost identical to this one, but fortunatly I did a search first :)

I would suggest a couple of fairly obvious enhancements to the idea:

       1) The communication between the device and the register should be encrypted to prevent eavesdropping.

       2) The communication should be digitally authenticated in such a way that the device knows that the reciept it's recieving is a valid, legal, issuer of digital receipts.

       3) The receipted should be digitally signed (authenticated) in such a way that if the customer needs to use the receipt to return a purchase to the store, he can prove that he really bought it at that store. Or at least, prove that the receipt on "his" device was issued by that store.

       4) Have the device use an E-Ink display, rather than an LCD display, to save on battery power.

Or, it could be made into an iphone app :)
