Insulated window shutters that lift or pivot upwards. The lifter mechanism has a slippy clutch built-in.. i.e. the shutter will slowly drift down under its own weight if the lifting-string-loop is not continually being pulled. A solar panel runs a small motor which pulls on the lifter. In the morning, the shutters are lifted. At night, the house gets sleepy and the 'eyelids' close.

Noise-activated too, of course, so that if there's a car crash outside the house, the shutters will jerk open.

Simulating excessive blinking on high-pollen-count days might be going too far.
