The placebo effect is a phenomenon where a patient experiences genuine therapeutic benefits from an intervention that lacks any specific physiological or pharmacological mechanism intended to treat their condition. Nocebo is the opposite. A patient may experience negative side effects, despite the lack
of plausible mechanism.
So, we develop, market and sell a product designed to maximize this effect. Instead of a placebo therapeutic, a nocebo... poison? I suppose. Obviously, a full range of pills, liquids, patches, creams etc. with a carefully chosen aesthetic, to promote a whole range of non-specific maladies.
Why? Maybe you have Munchausen's but aren't fully committed to doing real damage, maybe you need some real symptoms to add plausibility for a few days off work or maybe you want to poison your enemies.
A large aspect of this involves potential legal liability, if person a puts a few drops of our product in person b's drink, can person b sue? Well, legally, you have to prove harm. Person b may claim they had a headache for 3 days after they were "poisoned" by our product, however, we can prove it's inactive. Any harm caused to person b, was done by person b's own body.
Following that lawsuit, we can countersue for Business Defamation, they dragged our good name through the mud for something they did to themselves.
Importantly, we need a product name. Since the effects of the product are created by perception, it is in many ways a modern version of a curse. So I think "NocebHex" sits quite well.
Couple of other thoughts on the miracle of placebos.

[+] for at minimum bringing up a fascinating subject. |

I take vitamin supplements every morning knowing full well they might not be doing anything except making me feel like I'm supercharging my health with vitamins X, Z, T, P etc. |
|
|
I'm also aware that I could be poisoning myself, but at least I'm getting enough vitamin Q. |

The whole vitamin naming thing is a mess. Vitamin A, OK, Vitamin C, OK, see where they're going with this. Vitamin B... oh, there's 12. D? 3, there's also 3 Vitamin Ks, but no Vitamins G,H,I. |

Interestingly, we're all aware of macronutrients. We all know there's a need for straight energy supply from fats, protein and carbohydrates. Within the first two, there are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids that we can't synthesize. Vitamins we also know about. But ions (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, zinc etc.) aren't really thought about in the same way, but just as necessary. |
