A handheld garden tool which has a line trimmer ("strimmer") with a metal detection search coil integrated into the cutting head.
The user wears headphones, which convey the indicator tone from the detector electronics, and exclude the annoying whine of the motor.
Handy for those who want to add
the prospect of financial gain to boring vegetation management, and in heavily mined areas*.
If you get a positive tone, the ground is already cleared, ready to be investigated further.
That is all.
*BorgCo accept no liability for any damage, injury or death arising from the use of the device, howsoever caused.

How about a detector in the heel of a shoe? Wouldn't help
in heavily mined areas, but might explain why I keep turning
my head to tune my balance. |

Indeed, such devices are of little benefit retrospectively. |
Handy bomb defuser kit available at extra cost? |
Have you run it over your head yet in its mental detector mode? [+] |
Wouldn't another search parameter other than just eddy looking, such as divining line, be more financially lucrative. |
I wonder if the motor would interfere with the metal
detector. |
Not if the motor is in the handle, and drives the head through a flexible shaft, using ceramic bearings and polymer components. |
Yes, [what], that's the sort of stupid question that gets asked in a mixed-ability class. |

Good metal detectors have settings to reject iron, since
it's common and either worthless or rapidly oxidizing into
worthlessness. Also, since a bearing or whatnot would be
stationary relative to the coil, it could be baselined out. |

You forgot that the strimmed grass will provide a handy
visual reference for the areas already searched, plus, if
you're going to ask a farmer for access to their field, they
might be more inclined to agree if you're mowing it at the
same time. Less so if it's a big field of barley or
something. |

And the boss says "Mark it and get on with the job. You can dig in your own time" |

The DeLuxe version has a paint sprayer nozzle in the centre of the spinner; pull the trigger, mark the spot, move on. |
You missed out the flame-thrower (see link), which is
odd, for you. |
It's in development - just temporarily suspended for reconsideration. Work will resume when the smoke clears and the debris are cool enough to examine. |
//DeLuxe version has a paint sprayer nozzle// |

This shouldn't be in the visible spectrum, or metal detecting
will become a little too accessible. |
Gotta hand it to you 8th, that was even kind enough to
mention how fun it would be for kids. |
I love this. I missed this. I'm forever sorry, 8th. I shall
never be so lacking in my bunning duties ever again. |

algorithm>"Customers who liked this idea also liked
the nearly identical idea posted 17 years ago (see

Due to the poor phrasing of your proposal, that idea didn't come up on our preliminary searches. |
So 8th is evolving to think like hippo from 17 years ago?
<stunned silence>
There's hope... |
Oh, that's scary, [RayfordSteele]. Think of what might
come. (Sorry, [hippo], I missed the link as well as the
idea. Shoot. Good one.) |
Even 8th occasionally comes up with a nugget of an idea. |
Actually, yes, the idea is to come up with nuggets, or failing that, coins or jewelry. |
There's no hope. There's no safety, in numbers or anything else. There is no alternative. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your life as you have known it is over. You will be Assimilated. Resistance is Futile. |
Daleks versus the Borg! The Daleks would have a field day exterminating the feeble Borg like cockroaches. It would be like spring cleaning. |
//So 8th is evolving to think like hippo from 17
years ago?//
Scary indeed. The only other
possible explanation is that I am converging on
8ths thinking, while also travelling backwards in
time |
How foolish- time travel is completely impossible. |

<Fervently hopes that [hippo] hasn't seen "Star Trek: First Contact"/> |

// The Daleks would have a field day // |

You wish. Bring'em on... those sink-plunger waving tin-dustbin losers don't frighten us. All across space and time, they consistently get defeated by one rogue Time Lord and a random bunch of misfit helpers (Except for Brigadier Lethbridge-Stuart, who was a Top Bloke), often by something as simple as a floppy hat over the eye-stalk... |
Besides, there's always the infallible defence of Hiding Behind The Sofa... |
