With current technology it should be possible to assemble a CCD low-light camera, amplifier electronics and LCD in the form of a hexagonal cell the size of a small coin (but thicker).
Assemble a number of these into a pair of goggles, resembling insect compound eyes - say, one central higher resolution
cell surrounded by seven of lower res. Neighbouring cells are electronically linked so the displays merge seamlessly.
Actual resolution might not be as good as the latest night vision goggles, but you have a much larger, more 'natural' field of view, and they would also be less cumbersome (power supplies etc would obviously be mounted elsewhere on the body).
