Augmented reality air combat

Most pilots would like to try aerial dogfighting, just to see if they can do it.

But there are a lot of issues with having aircraft undertaking extreme aerobatic manoeuvres in close proximity.

The answer is the BorgCo aerial combat emulator.

The aircraft is comprehensively equipped with accelerometers, DGPS, etc. and can constantly transmit very precise information on its attitude, airspeed and position. Binocular cameras allow clouds to be registered and incorporated.

The pilot wears augmented reality goggles, and can see in unmodified form the real airspace around the aircraft, plus the instruments on the panel.

The AR system merely adds in highly realistic real-time images of comrades and opponents, plus the streaks of tracer fire.

Participants can be geographically remote from one another but still participate in a multiplayer real-time air battle at the controls of a real aircraft.

I wouldn't be surprised if something like this becomes the next Battlebots.

So is it anything like a flight simulator?
travbm, Nov 22 2015

       No, it's an emulator.

This would also work for training aerobaticists in close-formation flying, without the embarrassment of bumping into each other.

It's an emu - lator ? That's going to be one hell of a bird strike.

Definitely a harsher test for an airframe than the chicken gun ... just another inevitable escalation of the flightless poultry arms race. Watch out for the next calibre increase to ostrich cannons.

It's close to presently used cockpit constraints but not close enough to bone. Oh the things I could innuendo.

Call me boring if you will, but guessing old Migs are not that pricey, just do it for real. Go join in the fun in Syrian airspace, seems like no invitation is required.

but why not simulate? isnt that cheaper
pashute, Nov 24 2015

Why old Migs when you can use the latest planes from Ghadaffi's stock for free. If you have ties to "no El Quaeda"

I hear that a turkey just brought down a Russian fighter on the border with Syria.
