Tuesday Night Football   (+2)  [vote for, against]
Combine Fantasy Football with Video Game

Imagine a bar that is full of football fans on Tuesday. Everyone in the bar belongs to a fantasy football league, and has assembled a team at the beginning of the season. Rather than compute the numbers and assign points, as in your standard Fantasy Football, Your picked players' individual performance that week translate to your fantasy players' stats in a video game run by the bar. Each Fantasy Coach then plays the video game against the other teams, and the virtual athletes' ability to complete passes, sack, etc. depends on the actual athlete's performance that week. Prizes are awarded to winners each week, provided by sponsors with a vested interest on increasing bar attendance on Tuesdays. Games can be run among players at the bar, or each bar can have a team, and play on a national network. Play is at the coaching level, rather than the twitch and click level, and the graphics benefit from being calculated before the play runs, rather than on the fly in your standard console game...

One good thing about the future: no more football.

//Define: football//

I thought I had, by placing it in the American Football Category. I think it would work for any sport that has fantasy leagues, though.
-- dbsousa, Mar 03 2003

oops sorry - the ugly game. only kidding <ducks>
-- po, Mar 03 2003

I never _ever_ notice the category, unless someone points it out.
-- waugsqueke, Mar 03 2003

me too, obviously
-- po, Mar 03 2003

Yeah, yeah, yeah - but is it *really* football?
-- thumbwax, Mar 03 2003

nope.

Good game - but it just isn't football.
-- Jinbish, Mar 04 2003

OK, if we can get past the po-tay-to po-tah-to thing here, I have a question for the (soccer) football fans in the UK/EU/OZ. Do you have much interest in fantasy leagues? I wonder if this is an American phenomenon. I couldn't google any fantasy leagues outside of the US.

As far as the whole sports thing goes, I don't know anything about either sport, or even have any real interest. It just crossed my inventor's head and this is where I get rid of my ideas...

po-tay? po-tah?
-- po, Mar 04 2003

Yeah, there's fantasy football (association) in the UK. There was even a TV programme called "Fantasy Football League." The leagues are usually run on a for-profit basis by newspapers.
-- my face your, Mar 04 2003

[dbsousa]: Fantasy leagues are absolute rife here (UK) as well. Most of the newspapers I can think of in England and Scotland have various fantasy leagues. I have a football and cricket team in the BBC website. There were also innumerable (only because I am too lazy to count) 'World Cup' fantasy games.

Forgive my "that's not football" accusations. The idea is a very good one. There are (ahem!) soccer games like the "Championship Manager" that are pacled full of stats, apparently based on the real players - so your idea isn't actually too far from being baked/bakeable(?).

<<po-tay? po-tah?>>-po

As in the song: "You say Po-tay-to, I say Po-tah-to, You say To-may-to, and I say To-mah-to, Po-tay-to, po-tah-to, to-may-to, to-mah-to, Lets call the whole thing off..." See link for complete lyrics.

Video Games + Fantasy Sports + Drinking on Tuesday Night = No Girlfriend. Where do I sign up?
-- Cranor, Dec 04 2003

I think digital tv allows foot ball to have a free separate channel now. Every tv station can theoretically have a entire digital tv station dedicated only to sports. There is no need to air sports on any of the main tv stations as they can all air sports programs on their own digital signal. For example 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4 is your digital TV sports channel.
