need a standard for wifi sharing that doesn't penalize the host

I don't have a problem with people using my wifi hotspot, as long as it doesn't interfere noticeably with my own bandwidth. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a two-tier system where anybody who is logged in with proper authentication is given priority over people who use it as an open network? Anytime the authorized user needs bandwidth all other 'public' data transfer is throttled back but otherwise it's just like an open public network.

       Don't you mean "wifi swapping"?

So you'd end up with flustered laptoppers sitting in your front garden to use your internet connection? Fun. Bun for //all other 'public' data is throttled back//, and for letting me use the word laptoppers in a (coherent) sentence.

       I was hopeful too...

       wifi hotspot - ooh err
interfere noticeably - fnarr
two-tier - oh yes yes
throttled back - ooh you are naughty

       No, maybe not

I'm lucky in my congested neighborhood I have no less then 6 unsecured networks to choose from at any one time.

I use one cable connection that has a good ping and packetloss for gaming, and an ADSL connection that is a little laggy but the ports are open.

This is almost like you're advocating WiFi Tithing

[neilp] Is right, you can do this with QoS on the router. Teach the router which PCs are the "home" ones, those get full bandwidth. Everyone else gets less.
