ventilation

automatic ventilation system for cars

I hate getting into a hot car that has been sitting in the sun all day. Why can't cars be built with a vent that automatically expells the hot air?

I am imagining a vent positioned on the roof (sufficiently protected to keep out rain, prying hands). When the internal temperature of the car gets over a certain amount, the vent opens and fans blow the hot air out.

To conserve energy, this whole system can be powered by roof-mounted solar panels. This works well since if the sun goes away, the car doesn't need to be vented as much.

Thoughts?

A widget that fits in a slightly rolled down window, with a solar powered vent fan. [StarChaser, Mar 19 2001, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Sounds good, except for the solar panels, which would get damaged too easily by hail or snow/ice removal in winter. A highly reflective roof might do a good job of not absorbing the heat in the first place.

How about an awning-type attachment that you install in summer? Or a super-strong fan that you could activate from outside the car for a few minutes before you got in?

Can't you coat the solar cells with some sort of transparent material to minimize damage?

Newer Mercedes & BMW models will cool/heat the car prior to entry. (...Peter, since you're up, could you get the links for these? Thanks.)
